Reminds me of the story my niece told me years ago. When she was about six, she refused to come out of her bedroom Christmas morning, because she found out her parents had been lying to her about Santa Claus. So we never pretended to our kids that any make-believe characters were real. They still loved Easter and Christmas. Fake entities are unnecessary.

Yeah, my husband and I wouldn't have done the whole Santa thing. I was pretty young when I figured out Santa was just my Dad*, but it seemed so important to my parents that I "believe" I him, I just sort of played along for a few years to make them happy. Mom figured out I knew the truth when one year when Dad was on a diet and I suggested that rather than the usual cookies and milk, we should leave him some carrots and a glass of water.

8ve never understood why Christian parents, in particular, would want to teach kids about Santa. Not only does it put the focus on the material aspects of Christmas rather than the supposed "reason for the season," but many of these parents are likely wanting their kids to be Christian when they grow up. It seems to me that starting out their lives by lying to them about an "invisible" man who can do miraculous things, watches what they do in order to pass judgment on them and can't be proven to exist isn't a good way to build up trust in general, and specifically in regards to getting the kids to believe in a different invisible man who does miracles, watches over them and can't be proven to exist.
