Prominent Maltese Investigative Journalist Killed In Car Bombing

Daphne Caruana Galizia, a widely read and widely feared investigative journalist who exposed corruption among the political class in Malta, was killed in a car bomb there on Monday.

The bomb exploded as Galizia, 53, was driving near her home in Mosta, just outside the country’s capital of Valletta. The explosion sent debris from her vehicle flying, and catapulted her body over a wall.

Galizia ran a blog called Running Commentary, in which she chronicled the misdeeds and venality of powerful politicians. Earlier this year, she linked the country’s prime minister, Joseph Muscat, to the Panama Papers, the cache of documents leaked from a Panamanian law firm in 2015, which implicated many politicians in offshore tax and corruption schemes. Galizia found that Muscat’s wife, energy minister, and the government’s chief of staff held companies in Panama, which they denied. Muscat called (and won) a presidential election early because of Galizia’s expose.

“Everyone knows Ms Caruana Galizia was a harsh critic of mine both politically and personally, but nobody can justify this barbaric act in any way,” Muscat said at a press conference on Monday.

He asked the FBI to assist in the investigation of Galizia’s murder.

Assassins killed Panama Papers journalist with text message bomb

The assassins who killed Panama Papers journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia used a fatal text message sent from a boat out at sea, according to a report.

Authorities on the Mediterranean island of Malta arrested ten people for the explosion last month that killed the lauded 53-year-old blogger known for her criticism of the government.

Three have now been charged, with a report in Malta Today on Wednesday revealing details of the investigation, including how they allegedly set off the powerful bomb on her car.

Brothers George and Alfred Degiorgio, 54 and 52, were joined by Vincent Muscat, 55, in the reported scheme, which involved an electronic device attached the explosive that was put on the vehicle the morning of the blast. ...

Prosecutors have not released a motive for the killing.

Mexican journalist shot dead at primary school holiday party

XALAPA, Mexico (AP) — Attackers burst into an elementary school where a Christmas party was taking place and shot reporter Gumaro Perez to death Tuesday, making him at least the 10th journalist slain in Mexico this year in what observers have called a crisis of freedom of expression.

The Veracruz state security coordinator said in a statement that dozens of parents and children were present when the unidentified attackers shot Perez, whose own child attends the school in the city of Acayucan.

Perez, 34, covered crime for a number of local outlets, had founded the online news site La Voz del Sur and also worked for the local government in some capacity.

He was part of a state program designed to protect journalists as they carry out certain "high-risk" coverage, separate from a federal government program known as "the mechanism" that offers reporters measures like panic buttons on their cellphones and home security.

"He belonged to the preventive program for safe coverage of this Commission since 2015, which refers to mechanisms for reporting that diminish danger in high-risk events," the Veracruz State Commission for Attention and Protection of Journalists said in a statement. "Nevertheless, regrettably, he had not made us aware of having received any threats that could have put him at risk."

Mexico: Dead Body Found in Yucatan Belongs to Photojournalist

The autopsy of the mutilated body determined that the local reporter was killed by a blow to the head but ruled out execution by organized crime.

Authorities at the Mexican state of Yucatan said Friday that the body found a day earlier near Progreso city belonged to photojournalist Luis Abraham González Contreras, 31, who had been missing since Dec. 19.

The local medical forensic office carried out an autopsy of Contreras body and determined that his death was the result of a traumatic head injury caused by a blow to the head.

His body was found inside a bag with the upper and lower limbs separated from the torso and with 20 percent of his body surface burned.

The mutilation of the body was carried out post mortem, according to the medical report. His relatives were unable to identify his body according to the Yucatan's prosecutor’s office., which said his identify was determined by his fingerprints.

Guatemalan lawmaker arrested in killing of journalists

GUATEMALA CITY (AFP) -

Police in Guatemala arrested a ruling party lawmaker Saturday for involvement in plotting a 2015 killing of journalists.

Julio Juarez, of the FCN-Nacion party, was arrested near his home in San Bernardino, Suchitepequez, south of the capital.

He is suspected of having masterminded the killings, a spokeswoman for prosecutors said. ...

The two killings took place March 10, 2015 in Mazatenango. ...

"I have not done anything. And all this will be cleared up," Juarez told local media.

About 6,000 people are killed each year in Guatemala, with about half the crimes linked to drug trafficking and gangs.

Mexican journalist is stabbed 21 times in front of his family

Carlos Dominguez was waiting at a traffic light in the northern Mexico border city of Nuevo Laredo with his son, his daughter-in-law and his grandchildren when men armed with knives flung open the car door.

Dominguez, a 77-year-old opinion columnist who had worked as a journalist for nearly four decades, was stabbed 21 times, according to Mexican authorities. They said he was attacked by at least three men who remain unidentified and at large.

The killing Saturday afternoon underscores the lethal risks faced by journalists in Mexico and the growing wave of violence gripping the nation.

Officials said they were investigating to determine whether the attack was connected to Dominguez’s work. He wrote frequently about politics, organized crime and occasionally their intersection — a perilous beat in a country that was second only to war-torn Syria in the number of journalists killed last year.

Eleven journalists were slain across Mexico in 2017, with no culprits arrested in most of those cases. Dozens of reporters have fled the country or gone into hiding.

Murdered Slovakian Reporter Was Investigating High-Level Corruption

A Slovakian reporter specializing in tax fraud and corruption investigations and his girlfriend were found murdered over the weekend, according to police Monday.

Kuciak’s murder is the second in the last five months of an investigative journalist specializing in high level corruption in the European Union. On Oct. 17, Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed by a car bomb in Malta.

Jan Kuciak, a 27-year-old reporter for online news portal aktuality.sk, was found dead on Sunday alongside Martina Kusnirova at their home in the town of Velka Maca, about 40 miles from the Slovak capital, Bratislava. Police believe they were murdered sometime between Thursday and Sunday, when their bodies were discovered after family members became concerned that the couple could not be reached.

Police official Tibor Gaspar told reporters that Kuciak died of a gunshot wound to the chest while Kusnirova was shot in the head, according to the AFP news agency.

Journalist killed in Mexico’s Gulf coast state of Veracruz

VERACRUZ, Mexico — Mexican police said Thursday a journalist who ran a local news website was shot to death in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.

State police said Leobardo Vazquez was found dead late Wednesday in the town of Gutierrez Zamora, which is located in an area known for drug cartel activity.

Ivonne Hernandez Duran, Vazquez’s wife, said she heard shots and found her husband lying near a taco stand he operated out of his home.

Vazquez previously worked for other outlets, but was most recently managing the news site Enlace Informativo Regional.

The site covers general news and crime in the coastal town.

Russian reporter Borodin dead after mystery fall

A Russian investigative journalist who wrote about the deaths of mercenaries in Syria has died in hospital after falling from his fifth-floor flat.

Maxim Borodin was found badly injured by neighbours in Yekaterinburg and taken to hospital, where he later died.

Local officials said no suicide note was found but the incident was unlikely to be of a criminal nature.

However, a friend revealed Borodin had said his flat had been surrounded by security men a day earlier.

Vyacheslav Bashkov described Borodin as a "principled, honest journalist" and said Borodin had contacted him at five o'clock in the morning on 11 April saying there was "someone with a weapon on his balcony and people in camouflage and masks on the staircase landing".

Borodin had been looking for a lawyer, he explained, although he later called him back saying he was wrong and that the security men had been taking part in some sort of exercise.

After he was found badly injured at the foot of the building on Thursday, regional authorities said the door of his flat had been locked from the inside, indicating that no-one else had either entered or left the flat.

Journalist killed as protests flare in Nicaragua

Managua (AFP) - A Nicaraguan journalist was shot dead Saturday while filming a confrontation between demonstrators and the police, amid a wave of protests against the government which have left 11 people dead.

Miguel Angel Gahona was killed by a suspected sniper in the city of Bluefields, on Nicaragua's Caribbean coast, local media reported.

"We believe a sniper fired the shot, it wasn't the young people... The only people who were armed were the police and riot police," his colleague Ileana Lacayo told television station Canal 15.

Since protests erupted on Wednesday -- the biggest in President Daniel Ortega's 11 years in office -- journalists have reportedly faced attacks, been temporarily detained and had their work equipment stolen. Meanwhile, four independent television outlets were taken off air on Thursday, although only one currently remains closed.

Nicaraguans have taken to the streets over a proposed change to the pension system, which would see workers and employers pay more toward the retirement system. The reform would aim to settle a $76 million deficit faced by the country's social security institute.

Looks like an ISIS style attack to me. The terrorists from Iraq like to use this kind of "double tap" to spread carnage among the rescuers. Don't remember the Taliban themselves doing such over the last decades.

dotus not taking care of what is happening in Afghanistan and his policy failing there. A new ISIS trying to sideline local Taliban who were trying to reach an accord with the central government.

On the anniversary of one journalist's death, another is shot to death in Mexico

Radio journalist Juan Carlos Huerta had just pulled out of his subdivision in Mexico's Tabasco state Tuesday morning when a truck rammed into his car and then stopped in the road, blocking his path.

A blaze of bullets shattered the windows of Huerta's silver BMW sedan. By the time the truck sped off, Huerta was slumped behind the steering wheel, dead.

"They went to execute him," Tabasco Gov. Arturo Nunez Jimenez said at a news conference, dispelling initial speculation that the shooting may have been a botched robbery. He said the motive was unclear and no suspects had been identified. Huerta, a well-known media figure who hosted a radio program called "Without Reservations," was at least the fourth journalist killed this year in Mexico. His death on the outskirts of the city of Villahermosa shocked Mexico's journalism community, which on Tuesday was marking the first anniversary of the slaying of prize-winning journalist Javier Valdez.

Valdez, who had reported extensively on criminal groups, was shot dead on a busy road in broad daylight in the city of Culiacan. The killing stunned many in Mexico because of his high profile, and it prompted international calls that Mexico do more to protect journalists. Valdez was one of 11 Mexican journalists slain in 2017.

Federal authorities arrested a suspect in the Valdez case in April, a rare step in a country where most homicides, including those of journalists, go unpunished. Still, press freedom groups such as the Committee to Protect Journalists have pushed investigators to do more, saying the suspect who was arrested was probably a low-level assassin and not the mastermind of the attack.

Russian journalist shot and killed in Ukrainian capital

MOSCOW (AP) — Police in the capital of Ukraine say a Russian journalist has been shot and killed at his Kiev apartment.

Ukrainian police said Arkady Babchenko’s wife found him bleeding at the apartment on Tuesday and called an ambulance, but Babchenko died on the way to a hospital.

The 41-year-old Babchenko served in the Russian army during the first separatist war in Chechnya during the 1990s and later became a journalist. He worked as a military correspondent for several Russian media outlets.

Babchenko had been scathingly critical of the Kremlin in recent years. He left Russia in February 2017, saying he was receiving threats and concerned he might be jailed.

The Guardian
Russian journalist who was reported killed is still alive

Arkady Babchenko, the Russian journalist who was reported to have been shot dead in Kiev, has turned up alive at a news conference in Ukraine.

Babchenko, a Kremlin critic, emerged at a police press conference on Wednesday afternoon in front of journalists who had been expecting updates on the investigation into his murder.

Babchenko staged his death in coordination with Ukrainian police as part of an investigation into threats made against his life, officials explained. The plan had been in place for more than a month.

Babchenko, a veteran war correspondent, fled Russia in 2017 after receiving threats over a post he made on social media. A number of journalists and other dissidents have been killed in recent years in Kiev in murders that remain unsolved.

More details soon …

Suspect in case of Russian journalist who faked his own death denies plot

Prosecutors at the Shevchensky District court on Tuesday accused Borys Herman of arranging the alleged murder plot on behalf of Russian intelligence, alleging that he had hired a Ukrainian hitman to kill Babchenko in return for $40,000.

Ukraine’s SBU security service got wind of the alleged plot and then conceived the elaborate sting operation with Babchenko in which they pretended that the assassination had been successful.

The hoax was believed around the world, including by Babchenko’s friends and colleagues, and the international media. But less than 24 hours later, Babchenko stunningly reappeared alive and announced it had all been a ruse, an elaborate simulation in which he had been smeared with pig's blood and even taken to the morgue in an effort to fool the Russian-sponsored killers.

On Tuesday, Herman denied that he had planned to kill Babchenko and claimed he had been working with Ukraine's security services. He said he had been contacted by someone close to the Kremlin about plans to kill Babchenko but that he instead turned this information over to the Ukrainian authorities and worked on counter-intelligence operations with them, Reuters reported.

Journalist murdered in southern Mexico before Sunday's elections

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A Mexican journalist was murdered in the southern state of Quintana Roo, authorities said on Saturday, in the latest case of a reporter being killed before a presidential election riddled with violence.

Jose Guadalupe Chan Dzib was killed in the village of Saban, in the municipality of Jose Maria Morelos, the state government said in a statement. Local media reported that he was shot dead in a bar around 10 p.m. on Friday.

“We condemn this incident and ask that the state attorney general’s office investigates,” the statement said. “We reiterate our commitment to guaranteeing a peaceful election on Sunday, July 1.”

Voters head to the polls on Sunday, with leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador widely seen as the likely winner. Mexico’s 2018 election has been one of the most violent in modern history, with dozens of politicians killed across the country.

Mexican news director shot dead weeks after colleague's murder

The director of a Mexican news website has been shot dead in the beach resort of Playa del Carmen, the second employee of the publication to have been killed in less than a month.

Rubén Pat, the director of the online outlet Semanario Playa News, was shot dead at around 5.48am on Tuesday outside a bar in the city 65km south of Cancún.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Playa News appealed to Carlos Manuel Joaquín González, the governor of Quintana Roo state, which has been hard hit by violence in recent months.

“That’s two from our team, Governor, when will the lack of public safety in our state end?” the statement said.

Pat was the sixth Mexican journalist believed to have been killed for his work in 2018. As is often the case in attacks on the country’s journalists, the immediate motive was not clear.

Last year, Pat complained that municipal officers had detained and beaten him after he published a story on a banner hung by a drug cartel accusing the police of acting in cahoots with a rival cartel.

Three Russian investigative journalists have been killed in Central African Republic

Three Russian journalists were ambushed and killed in the Central African Republic were probing the activities of a private military company with alleged links to the Kremlin, according to The Center for Investigation Management, the Russia-focused media outlet with which they were affiliated.

The three-person documentary film crew were killed on Monday night (July 30), after their car was reportedly ambushed by unidentified assailants near Sibut, over 180 kilometers (112 miles) northeast of the capital, Bangui. Orhan Dzhemal, Alexander Rastorguyev, and Kirill Radchenko had arrived in CAR on Friday to investigate the activities of Wagner, a Russian military firm.

It wasn’t immediately clear who masterminded the attack or if their killing was related to their ongoing investigation. Their driver, however, survived. Russia’s foreign ministry said it was in close contact with officials in CAR and was looking to find out the circumstances behind their death.

Exiled Russian opposition figure Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who funds the IMC investigative site, said the three journalists were working with his organization “on an investigation into Russian mercenaries, in particular the Wagner group.” The private military outfit has been described as a shadowy group, fighting in battles including in Syria to support president Bashar al-Assad’s forces. Last April, Russian investigative journalist Maxim Borodin, who had written about the death of the Wagner mercenaries in Syria, died after mysteriously falling from his fifth-floor flat.
