Jacques Chirac, former French president, dies aged 86

Head of state from 1995-2007 led opposition to the Iraq war and was first president to acknowledge France’s role in the Holocaust

The former French president Jacques Chirac, a self-styled affable rogue who had one of the longest political careers in Europe, has died aged 86.

For several years he had suffered from memory loss said to be linked to a form of Alzheimer’s disease or to the minor stroke that he had while in office.

Chirac, who was head of state from 1995 to 2007, boasted one of the longest continuous political careers in Europe – twice president, twice prime minister and 18 years as mayor of Paris.

Jessye Norman obituary
One of the great sopranos of the 20th century who bewitched audiences with her powerful stage presence

Barry Millington
Tue 1 Oct 2019 18.14 BSTLast modified on Wed 2 Oct 2019 10.28 BST

The American soprano Jessye Norman, who has died of complications from a spinal cord injury aged 74, was one of the most prominent singers of the last quarter of the 20th century. At her peak, her opulent tone, combined with a regal stage manner, brought her immense prestige and high fees.

Though generally billed as a soprano, or “dramatic soprano”, she had a gloriously rich middle and lower register, which she exploited to great effect in repertoire associated with mezzo-sopranos. Her voice type, combining the tessitura of a dramatic or spinto soprano with the timbre of a mezzo, was sometimes referred to as that of a “falcon”, named after the famous 19th-century French singer Cornélie Falcon.

That could be said about a great deal of musicians. It's something you get used to in the music and stage world. High passion and talent for an artistic craft creates some interesting characters.

Ironically, I was just doing a bunch of listening to Cream a couple weeks back.

The 'Medium Cool' actor also starred for David Lynch in 'Mulholland Drive' and 'Twin Peaks' after Tarantino resuscitated his career.

What a cosmic joke. A good and decent person like Cummings dies at 68, while walking corpses and downright evil people (the sitting President and Henry Kissinger come immediately to mind) seem destined to live forever.

Terrible news. I think I'm going to need to avoid the rightwingnut sites today as I don't want to see the comments.
Hopefully someone will help the orange menace write an appropriate tweet on this tragedy...
