TS Lee and TS Maria

Post by Volkonski » Sat Sep 16, 2017 1:44 pm

TD 14 has become TS Lee. However before Lee will get across the Atlantic TD 15, which is much further west, will become Hurricane Maria. Maria is forecast to hit Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Virgin Islands starting Wednesday. Here we go again.

1. The disturbance is expected to intensify and will likely bring
tropical storm and hurricane conditions as well as flooding
rainfall to portions of the Lesser Antilles early next week. These
conditions could also spread into the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico
by mid week. Interests in these areas should monitor the progress
of this system and follow any advice given by local officials.

Has anyone noticed that the two big storms in the Atlantic right now are Mary and Joseph?

Right now Maria looks to follow in Irma's footsteps. People recovering from Irma are about to get hit again :( Current forecast is for Maria to become a 3 but it could get stronger.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphic ... e#contents
The environment should be conducive for continued
strengthening for the next several days with low shear, a warm
ocean and a fairly moist mid-tropospheric air mass. The official
intensity forecast follows the model consensus, but a more rapid
intensification than indicated here is certainly possible over the
next couple of days
.

:snippity:

1. Maria is expected to strengthen and affect portions of the
Leeward Islands as a hurricane early next week, bringing dangerous
wind, storm surge and rainfall hazards. Hurricane or Tropical
Storm Warnings will likely be required for portions of these
islands today.

2. Maria could also affect the British and U.S. Virgin Islands and
Puerto Rico by mid week as a dangerous major hurricane, and
hurricane watches could be issued for these islands as early as
tonight. Interests in these areas should monitor the progress of
Maria and follow any advice given by local officials.

Since I'm not above embarrassing myself by writing something everyone may have already figured out, here's the obvious musical accompaniment for this storm:

I believes I'm gonna go on up to Tennessee and see the sights up there. Maria does look like she's following in Irma's footsteps. Darn, I hate it when I'm forced to get on the road and see some sights. So, it's going to be hiking in the mountains for me this coming week, I guess.

Isn't there some theory that this hurricane season has something to do with El Nino (which is, if I remember my high school earth sciences correctly, named after/in reference to baby Jesus?)

Kinda doubt it's a reference to Jesus since the opposite pattern is La Nina, unusually cold ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific.

ETA: oops. "The name [el nino] was chosen based on the time of year (around December) during which these warm waters events tended to occur." https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/ninonina.html

ABC News
Evacuation orders issued for 4 areas of Puerto Rico as Hurricane Maria nears

Evacuation orders have been issued for parts of Puerto Rico as Hurricane Maria heads toward the island.

Maria, now a Category 3 hurricane, is forecast to rapidly intensify to a Category 4 storm with winds of 150 mph as it approaches Puerto Rico late Wednesday morning.

Maria might make landfall on the eastern side of Puerto Rico and could bring major damage to the U.S. territory late Wednesday morning and into the afternoon, two weeks to the day since Hurricane Irma tore through Puerto Rico, killing at least three.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello said starting midday Tuesday, conditions will begin to deteriorate and the island could get between 12 and 18 inches of rain.

Los Angeles Times
Hurricane Maria grows into a Category 5 storm and makes landfall in the storm-battered Caribbean

Hurricane Maria, a dangerous Category 5 storm, reached the island of Dominica in the eastern Caribbean on Monday night with sustained winds of 160 mph, forecasters said.

It was expected to deliver destructive waves, a storm surge of up to 9 feet, flooding and mudslides along a path that the National Hurricane Center said includes Guadeloupe, the Leeward Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, where it was expected to arrive as soon as Tuesday night.

The storm was moving northwest at 9 mph Monday night as it struck Dominica, a nation of roughly 74,000 people located less than 400 miles southeast of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello declared a state of emergency Monday, activated the National Guard and closed all schools.

Initial reports are of widespread devastation. So far we have lost all what money can buy and replace. My greatest fear for the morning is that we will wake to news of serious physical injury and possible deaths as a result of likely landslides triggered by persistent rains.
So, far the winds have swept away the roofs of almost every person I have spoken to or otherwise made contact with. The roof to my own official residence was among the first to go and this apparently triggered an avalanche of torn away roofs in the city and the countryside.
Come tomorrow morning we will hit the road, as soon as the all clear is given, in search of the injured and those trapped in the rubble.
I am honestly not preoccupied with physical damage at this time, because it is devastating...indeed, mind boggling. My focus now is in rescuing the trapped and securing medical assistance for the injured.
We will need help, my friend, we will need help of all kinds.
It is too early to speak of the condition of the air and seaports, but I suspect both will be inoperable for a few days. That is why I am eager now to solicit the support of friendly nations and organisations with helicopter services, for I personally am eager to get up and get around the country to see and determine what's needed.

I think that the ENSO is a Pacific phenomenon. Also, I am told that this is neither a El Nino or La Nina year. Just an ordinary year in which New England gets pounded with snow.

Heartbreaking for the USVI, Puerto Rico and the others in the path. PR has such terrible financial problems already, it's a tragedy. Haven't been too impressed with their young Governor, hope he's up to what sounds like an enormous job.

John Morales‏Verified account @JohnMoralesNBC6
New eye will have at least 30 miles in diameter. Almost the width of Puerto Rico. No one will escape extreme winds, perhaps temporarily Cat 4.

He's pretty confident not FL this ride:

Lee didn't do much, but now it could be Category 5 Hurricane Maria - Not from West Side Story in the title.

Wow Foggy, thanks, now it's showing animated GIFs from Twitter with just a link. It's a bit pokey, and had to turn off NoScript for the tweets to load, but that's awesome!!
