Threats from militia provoke shutdown at Oregon capitol, a day after GOP lawmakers fled

Oregon’s top lawmakers will shut down the state capitol after receiving threats from militia groups, who authorities say are planning to demonstrate there in support of the 11 Republican senators who fled the state to dodge a vote on climate change.

State Senate President Peter Courtney (D) told his colleagues on Friday that Oregon State Police had informed him there was a credible threat to him, the rest of the remaining senators — all of whom are Democrats — and the building’s staff.

“It was obviously a credible threat because Sen. Courtney wouldn’t close it down for no reason,” Courtney’s spokeswoman Carol Currie told The Washington Post.

State police confirmed the danger in an emailed statement.

“We have been monitoring information throughout the day that indicates the safety of legislators, staff and citizen visitors could be compromised if certain threatened behaviors were realized,” wrote Capt. Timothy Fox.

Instead of decrying the obvious sedition, the RWNJ crowd will accuse the legislators of overreacting.

Looks like any hope for another standoff died when the republican legislators refused militia support.

Ah the hypocrisy of the RWNJ. When a Republican governor sends the State Police and Texas Rangers (or a US Congressmen threatens to send US Marshals) to round up fleeing Democratic legislators, it is just political business, but if a Democratic Governor does the same, it's treason.

Can someone explain how the Oregon constitution works at this point? There is a part about not paying the representatives until they come back but what can be done long term to settle the issue? I am suspicious that this part of the constitution has not been thought through in terms of possible 21st century political tactics.

At some point, they'd have to be deemed to have abandoned their office? Or is that a crazy?

Mr. Constitutional Butcher claims he saw one of the runaway Senators. Might not be true. He is headed to Salem.

So, the family decides to head to town this morning for breakfast in Redmond.. it’s early, little foggy without much coffee.. I order bacon and eggs, the wife orders huevos rancheros, the kiddo a Mickey Mouse pancake.. I look across the room and low and behold who do I see sipping a cup of joe??? SENATOR DENNIS LITHICUM

I walk over and say “what in the hell are you doing here?”

He says, good morning!! Having bacon and eggs just like you.. I’m astonished at his candid attitude and I say man osp is on the look out and this is a bold move.. he tells me it’s ok I’m not worried... pretty sure the boys have me covered... he looks up at the table across from him as 4 dudes raise their cups up to acknowledge..

I couldn’t help but smile! I said ok... carry on and be safe.. let me know if I can help!!

So he's suggesting that Lithicum has goons waiting to get into it with OSP?

I don't believe him - I see several poots claiming to see some of the runaway Senators. I think they are trying to get the OSP to chase fake news or something.

Luana the Bundy fangirl took her horse to the capitol to protest. It shit all over the steps and refused to go back down the steps. The OSP helped her get it down.

Absurd. Horse has better sense than attempt to walk on unsecured board. Take all that crap off him, turn him away from all the watchers and walk him beside him (uphill side) diagonally down the steps. Horses walk on rough terrain. No horse peeps in the group? Geeez.
Hits the nail on the head. What stupid kind of horse owner doesn't know how to get a horse to move without making it panic and without beating it into submission?

Yes, I already know the answer to that.

CNN picked up the story, but somehow missed the part about the repubs tweeting out the wrong photo. Damn.

#2: Why do you call some who threaten violent attack a “militia” vs others “domestic terrorists?”🤔

While I love me some AOC she should not have weighed in on this. Us locals (especially the local media) know way more about this than she does. She got some stuff wrong.

Fox & Friends is trying to justify Oregon Republicans having a tantrum and fleeing the state instead of voting on legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on the basis that Republicans in Republican districts don't like it.

Yeah, this is liberty dying to thunderous applause. The Republican Party has become so obsessed with control that it will not even participate in government if it doesn't have it.

To be fair (although what's the point?), Democrats have used the skipping out to keep them from reaching a quorum trick too (Wisconsin comes to mind).

What makes this different is militia getting into the act, the threats to the cops if they come and get them, and the disinformation to the gullible RWNJ rural base that the Senators have some sort of God given Constitutional right to skip out.

I hope they indict the guy who actually threatened the state troopers.

The Texas Dems also skipped out during the redistricting fight sometime around 2005ish or so. Tom Delay hinted that the US Marshals should be called out to pick the up in New Mexico.

The whole milita outrage is specific to the GOP.
