The ruin of public education is on the move

So,

This week I and my colleagues got devastating news . At the end of the school year, our building is one of 6 they are closing permanently. The largest district in Kansas is low on money.

We found out Monday night at the Board meeting and then got our fuck you packets Tuesday after school.

We all still have jobs but that is not the issue.

They do not care that we build communities and love our students fiercely.

Also, in what other business does someone who has been in the business for 25+ years with a Master's Degree , have to worry about what they will be teaching and where they will be teaching???

We have to redo our resumes and apply for internal positions if we want to choose what building we will be in. Otherwise we will be placed somewhere -anywhere that fits our licensing. For example, I teach Social Studies but I have my Master's in Sped. I tried sped two different times for a total of 3 years but I have a feeling that is where I will be moved to as there are only 2 Social Studies positions and at least 12 SS teachers that are being displaced.

Clearly we are NOT doing what is best for kids OR teachers.

The Districts new saying is "people over places" Which burns me to no end. As a teacher, I develop strong bonds with each of my students. Heck I am god-mother to several of my former student's children. But I guess I am supposed to just be happy I have a job; who cares what building right????

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRr

I cried all night Monday and Tuesday. By Wed I could just be mad without bawling.

Today I am re-writing my resume and doing all the stuff to apply for a job I already have and have a 2 year contract that says so.

I am 2 years from retirement.

Sorry to hear about your school change vexation.

Here this is the last year with 3 high schools. Come September our two new high schools will open replacing those 3 so every high school teacher and student will be in a new school.

But wait there's more.......

Two of the old high school buildings will replace 3 existing middle schools.

Lots of change all at once.

They are also putting up a new scoreboard at the high school football stadium. :panic:

They're closing a bunch of schools here and consolidating some others. We have 2 middle schools that will combine 2 different (rival) schools in the same building but they assure us everything will be hunky dory because one school will be on one floor and the other school will be on the second floor. The only things they will have to share are the library, cafeteria, bathrooms, gym, auditorium.....

What could possibly go wrong?

Brockton MA was the big city (~100,000 residents) close to the small town where I grew up. We often went there for shopping, movies, etc. It is mostly famous as the home of boxing great Rocky Marciano aka The Brockton Bomber who held the world heavyweight championship from 1952 to 1956. (He remains the only heavyweight champion to finish his career undefeated.)

Was surprised :o to see this headline-

4 Brockton School Committee members call for Massachusetts National Guard to end "chaos" at high school

https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/bro ... committee/
Four school committee members asking the Massachusetts National Guard to help with security issues at Brockton High School say students are "causing chaos" and disrupting the learning environment too often.

School committee members Joyce Asack, Tony Rodrigues, Ana Oliver and Claudio Gomes held a press conference Monday to discuss their request.

"We do need to take our schools back into control and make sure our students have a safe learning environment," Rodrigues said. "Because what's going on at the high school is disheartening. Kids are losing precious learning time when kids are causing chaos."

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey issued a statement Sunday saying she is "committed to ensuring that schools are safe and supportive environments." Healey added that she has been in touch with local officials about the concerns at Brockton High School.

Last month, several teachers offered a tearful plea for assistance at a school committee meeting. The teachers said there have been multiple fights at the high school recently.
Seriously? The National Guard?

:snippity:
I do sympathize. When I was in high school our town's residents refused to pass the school budget at the annual town meeting. The schools were put on a state-mandated austerity budget.

An addition to the overcrowded high school was just being finished but there was no money for anything to furnish it with. We students moved the books from the old library to the new library during English classes. In American History the map of Europe was from the 1930's. In Biology we had the then new BCSC textbooks but didn't have the lab workbooks or equipment to go with it. The teacher would do lab work demonstrations as best he could while we sat and watched. Our Latin textbooks would have been thought out of date by Mr. Chips. ;)

Sigh.

I am so sorry, SC. The education system in this country is a disgrace.

On the rare plus side, the state legislator, who ran on more money for education in the Philly area, won his race last week based on that. He also saved the state legislature for the Democrats.

Oklahoma Schools Are Fighting Back Against Porn-Obsessed Superintendent
Edmond Public Schools has petitioned the state’s Supreme Court to intervene in a dispute over efforts to ban two national bestselling books

https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/p ... 234972816/
Oklahoma’s State Superintendent Ryan Walters has already made headlines for sending context-free porn to his fellow lawmakers. He’s now accusing one of the school districts under his jurisdiction of supporting the exposure of children to what he describes as “pornography” in schools. What horrendous, degenerate, pornographic display of hedonism is Walters’ administration accusing teachers of hiding in libraries? Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, and Jeannette Walls’s memoir The Glass Castle.

Yesterday, Edmond Public Schools petitioned the state Supreme Court to rule on a threat from the Oklahoma Department of Education, headed by Walters, to remove the two books — or face consequences. The dispute between Walters and the school district is just the latest in a long list of culture war battles staked out by the “anti-woke,” porn-obsessed superintendent.
