v.4 of the IPS forum software

Post by Foggy » Sat May 23, 2015 12:14 pm

1. Everybody panic.     This is a major upgrade and I'm having the people who make the software do the upgrade instead of me. 2. Today I got our hosting company to upgrade our PHP installation in preparation for the upgrade of the forum software. The forum software is based on the PHP language. We're now using PHP v.5.4.41 you're welcome very much. 3. There are a couple of things I need to warn you about because the people who make the software warned me to warn you. User / Display NamesUsernames and display names have been merged in IPS4. As the administrator, you may select which to keep during the upgrade process. Please note that this field will be the publicly displayed field for the user. Would you like to retain usernames or display names? I'm going to keep usernames because that way everyone will be able to log in. If -- after the upgrade -- you have trouble logging in, shoot me an email at foggy@thefogbow.com and I'll get you back in. If you'd like to change your username after the upgrade, let me know. I think only admins can change the usernames. Friends / FollowersInstead of friends, IPS4 features followers. A member now has the ability to follow another member without that being automatically reciprocal. You have the option of converting friends to followers, but please beware that this option may result in undesired notifications based on new content from followed members and we do NOT recommend you opt to convert. Would you like to convert friends data? I'm NOT going to convert friends data, for exactly the reason they describe. Your friends would all be converted to followees (in other words, you're the follower) and you'd start getting emails every time one of your friends posts. If you want to follow other people, you can do that after the conversion. In other words, all your friends will be unfriended by the upgrade. Question and Answer ForumsPrevious versions of the software allowed enabling of "Mark as Solved" on a per-forum basis. IPS4 enhances this functionality by allowing members to ask questions and rate their answers. Would you like to convert existing "solved" topics or leave them as-is? I don't think we have any of these. If you'd like to use them after the conversion, I'll try to work on that. This won't happen for a few days, I think. I have to reply to their email with my answers to all these things and giving them consent to go forward with the conversion. 4. Everybody panic some more.

Let me find that line where they sing "it's been good to know ya" in The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Hmmm... settle on one name? THAT'S UNPOSSIBLE.

I, for one, look forward to our new Version 4 overlord. Do we have a list of new features?

Be afraid, be very afraid...

I've used the "upgrade by tech support" before.

Good Luck Rooster.

Yes but you can still change display names. This is a setting that can be turned on so Bonsall Obot, fear not.

The answer is no, you can still change display names in the new software. I can also install a mod that will show the display name history so people can track your ass down.

I never got the hang of the forum before, so I will be just as lost and helpless as ever. However, I won't let it stop me from littering the pages from time-to-time with juvenile remarks I like to call hillbilly wit. Ever onward.

Let me dig back through the updates and I'll make a list.

1. Cover photos. They started this a bit with the profiles but it looks like they're trying to make the software more social network worthy. On your profile and on calendar events there are now Cover photo options.

An example is my ipb profile on the software site:

2. Front end changes.

For instance here's the default

Been nice knowing all y'all.

Okay, stunning new ways to look at my own and other's profiles. How is it newer and better as far as posting is concerned? I'm not one to make up a rumor or anything, but I've heard we can't put people in the FEMA camp anymore. :-

Embedding content should be a lot easier. The new version seems to make better use of the embed links. So you should just be able to copy and paste a link into the board and it should format it

An example:

Not sure how this matters but there's now a configurable staff directly to quickly identify the mods.

There's a lot of back end stuff that you guys won't notice that will help the administration of the site.

See my post about AEN and why I don't think Jindal is a good comparison.

Probably the most welcome improvement (for me anyway) is the move from Flash to HTML5, which means those of us using our iPhones or iPads will get our smileys back.

Let's just assume I said something witty.
