Do they not have one? Maybe see if they have a "karma" plug-in - they work in a similar way, but can add an extra thing to the user identification box on every post showing how much "kaema" the poster has earned. I'm really surprised no one's come up with a like button yet, though... that's just weird.
They do but maybe it doesn't yet work with this particular model. Dunno.

I am on another board using phpBB, and they have a "thanks" button, which looks and functions like the "like" button on the last software we had.

Which is a VERY useful thing to someone who - often has difficulty getting on the site but can (nearly) always get email. (Like - someone subject to the GreatFirewallOfChina.)
I made the same request today in the other thread.

Also, too, when you talk about the "Great Firewall of China," don't you fear getting a knock on the door by the Chinese gestapo?

I really despise China's leaders, as they want it both: Communist totalitarian power and capitalism. And they murder and destroy to keep it that way -- not to mention lining their pockets with billions.

No, I do not fear that - not for a second. Millions of Chinese and expats use VPNs every day. Were I using VPN to surf for porn or engage in certain types of political activities relating to my host country, it might be a different story. But I have no interest in doing either.

And ... I'll just say that I see most things about China a LOT less "black and white" than I did before I moved here. There's a whole lotta good things going on here too. But ... I'll just leave it at that for now. :)

Here is the complete list of available Extensions. I can't find anything about "like" or "thanks" or anything like that.

But hey, have at it. Maybe you can find something I can't.

REMINDER: Do NOT tell me about "Modifications". Those are for earlier versions of phpBB, and we're not converting to an earlier version of phpBB. Version 3.1.5 is the most recent version; if I don't use that, I get an error message all over the Administration Control Panel. When you're using the latest version, you cannot install Modifications and I'm not going to try.

If you can't find an EXTENSION at the link above that does what you want, then I can't do it, and you might as well stop asking.

Sincerely,

The phpBB site is fairly clear that mods are for 3.0 and extensions are for 3.1.

The last time I installed a mod (this was, like, 2010) that wasn't officially supported, it broke something else on the board, and when I asked for help from the developer, he said "I don't know how to fix that."

The forum right now is smoking fast, and I'm not going to install anything that isn't a fully tested and approved extension. :nope:

I timidly post here something that has been bugging me of late, but this seems to be a topic that is way too techie for me, so apologies if this is too, too simple a question.

All of the sudden, people are changing their names. Now we know that Bonsall whatever does that rather regularly, but he's easy to spot, by his unchanging avatar and his choice of jingoistic slogans. But when others do it, I haven't a clue who's talking. I look and see "Member since January 2009" but don't know who it is. Is there no way in profiles to show prior handles???

Just askin'! You may go back to your version and code conversations now. Image

Sincerely, your humble gadfly.

I dunno. Can they change their names on a whim here? They could on IPS. PhP never gave that option. I agree, though. I'm old and I don't like change.

For the record, I only did it because board-that-must-not-be-named allowed it and I liked picking funny names. As OD pointed out, I always made it a point to never, ever change my avatar; I was never, ever trying to fool anyone.

Utterly minor feature request.

I access fogbow through an "unread posts" bookmark. I only follow a few topics, so when I've read them I go to "mark all forums as read" ... on the Board Index" page.

But that starts with a list of "Active Topics" which I'm not interested in. So I have to scroll down to the "flag as read" button.
(Yeah, yeah ... takes me all of 5 seconds ... hence the minor-ness of my request).

So : request : if possible, is there a way of moving "flag-as-read" higher in the hierarchy.

a) On the top bar next to Active Topics
b) Quick Links
c) To the top of the Board Index page
d) Omitting the list of Active Topics from the board index page.
e) Bookmark "flag-as-read" ?
f) Other
g) What the heck are you griping about?

I can't really move the "Flag as Read" button without some PHP programming that is above my skill level. Sorry, you'll sorta have to keep scrolling. :blackeye:

I'm too newbie to start threads, but here's my suggestion: Can there be something under The Resistance (for now) that is just about opportunities to take action? No chat, banter, or repartee — just things like upcoming town halls and where to get more info; petitions; deadlines (today's the day to comment on national monuments), etc. A one-stop shop to get the word out about things that can be done. I'm not burned out.

If such a forum exists and I missed it, please disregard.

This is a fantastic idea. Anyone can start a thread, I even started one. Please do it! I would subscribe to this kind of thread immediately and I'm certain it would be very popular!

RVInit is right, if you have 3 posts you can start a new thread. This one would require a lot of work and a tremendous amount of self-discipline by everyone. Would it include events in all 57 states? What happens if you post an event in, say, Raleigh? I think about 5 people here live close enough to attend. But we'd have to discuss the event in a separate thread, or it would clutter up the thing and crowd out the events in East Armpit, NJ.

I don't know how anyone can find time to post all the events nationwide, but if you can, go for it.

Perhaps if pipistrelle is prepared to do the "clean up in aisle 3" work, you could give her some limited privileges to manage that thread or a little group of threads, if that's possible? Whenever someone creates a thread for "just stuff, no comments, no threadjacks" it gets polluted despite that, unless the thread is actually locked against casual posters. Which might defeat the object. But if pipi has a mop and bucket ...?

What pipistrelle needs is a page, not a thread. But our version of the software is still out of date since the kludge several months ago. I need to find out how to upgrade us, probably this weekend. If I succeed, I will find a way to implement a page for her. I will make announcements on the upgrade, so when I finish it, remind me to do that.

You know that old saying about ASSUME.

I'm not sure I want to do any work. I have a day job. :-D It doesn't have to be everything happening everywhere, and maybe events are unrealistic except in the larger cities. I'd just like one place where you can post/read actions that you can take, like the comments on the theft of national monuments, rules, regs, etc. Some of it probably falls under Indivisible, though, so maybe it's just a bad idea. But I really wanted y'all to comment on the monuments. (As an aside, hunters and sportsmen weren't showing the love to Zinke.)

I like talk as much as the next (gender non-specific) person, but I also like to do what I can to let our "representatives" know about who they're representating.
