Bulgaria confirms first four cases of COVID-19: Health officials

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/wo ... s-12515652
Two men from the northern city of Pleven and two women from the city of Gabrovo in central Bulgaria tested positive for COVID-19 following widespread testing, said Todor Kantardzhiev, head of the National Centre of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases.

The government was due to hold an emergency meeting later on Sunday to discuss additional measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Bulgaria is one of the last countries in Europe to be affected by the virus, which has already infected over 100,000 people worldwide and left 3,500 people dead.

The country is already battling an influenza epidemic with hospitals full of flu patients - potentially jeopardising preparedness to respond to a spread of the coronavirus, health authorities warned earlier this week.

COVID-19 stricken Grand Princess cleared to dock in Oakland, Calif.

https://toronto.citynews.ca/2020/03/08/ ... and-calif/
The captain of a cruise ship hit by the new coronavirus has informed the passengers, which include 237 Canadians, that the vessel is now headed to the port of Oakland, Calif.

In a ship-board address Saturday night, Grand Princess Capt. John Smith said the vessel would likely dock Sunday afternoon and that people needing “acute medical treatment” would be taken to health-care facilities in California.

Smith said other guests would be taken to federally operated isolation sites or transported out of California, however, he noted that he had been not given any specific information about non-U.S. citizens.

So far, two passengers and 19 crew members, whose nationalities have not yet been disclosed, have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The ship, with more than 3,500 people aboard, and has been idling off the coast of San Francisco for the several days now waiting for clearance to dock.

So, a question about language - when did we switch from plain old corona virus, to COVID19, and now to novel coronavirus? Who is shaping this discussion?

Well, Covid19 is the disease. The virus is SARS Cov-2. Just like AIDS vs HIV. As for "novel coronavirus", coronavirus is a whole collection of viruses, not specific enough, and the official name sounds like a bunch of jargon, so I gather that calling it "novel coronavirus" is a good compromise. I think.

Understand that virologists have a specific language they use, mostly to distinguish the organism itself (a novel - as in previously unknown - coronavirus) from the disease/syndrome it causes (COVID-19 - meaning COronoa VIrus Disease 2019).

Or you could, like some, call it “‘flu.”

The Life Care Center in Kirkland is not a happy place.

70 staff members have covid symptoms and haven’t been tested. Test kits aren’t available at Life Center in sufficient numbers. If our medical personnel and first responders are exposed and need testing and quarantine this will lead to an even more dire situation. Nationwide, the infection and death stats don’t add up, as the test kits aren’t available and results are now dispersed to Independent labs.

Except that no one knows how fast it's actually spreading because they have next to no testing.
Fewer than 100 people had been tested for the coronavirus in New York City as of noon on Friday, according to the city’s Department of Health, even as concerns grew that the virus was circulating largely undetected.

Here we go again. San Antonio won't be happy.

: Passengers on Grand Princess cruise ship in California will face quarantine

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/08/coronav ... ngers.html
The Department of Health and Human Services said Sunday passengers of the Grand Princess cruise ship will be transferred to military facilities for medical screenings and a 14-day quarantine. California officials said earlier this week there are more than 3,500 people aboard the ship, which has been idled at sea, about 50 miles from San Francisco, since Wednesday.

The ship will move to the port in Oakland, California on Sunday to begin disembarking guests. The nearly 1,000 passengers who are residents of California will be quarantined at Travis Air Force Base and Miramar Naval Air Station, HHS said, and residents of other states will complete the mandatory quarantine at Joint Base San Antonio Lackland in Texas or Dobbins Air Force Base in Georgia.

Vice President Mike Pence said Friday there were at least 21 people infected by COVID-19 on the ship, 19 of whom were crew members. HHS did not say whether crew members will face quarantine or disembark from the ship. —

Well, this is something.

The Portuguese President (Marcelo) is currently self-isolating, because he was in contact with a group of students in which one was infected with COVID-19.

Given how he's always hugging and kissing people, it was only a matter of time...

Leaked coronavirus plan to quarantine 16m sparks chaos in Italy

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... s-in-italy
Italy has been plunged into chaos after details of a plan to quarantine more than 16 million people in the north amid an escalating coronavirus outbreak were leaked to the press, sending thousands into panic as they tried to flee south.

The whole of Lombardy, including its financial capital of Milan, and 14 provinces across the worst-affected northern regions, have been shut down until 3 April as Italy grapples to contain the spread of a virus as deaths rose from 233 to 366, with 6,387 current cases overall.

Thousands crowded train stations in Lombardy or jumped into their cars after details of a draft decree banning people from leaving or entering the region were revealed by Corriere della Sera late on Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday morning dozens of police officers and medics wearing masks and hazmat suits waited in Salerno, in Campania, for passengers who had boarded overnight trains from Lombardy. The passengers will be registered and obliged to self-quarantine as fears mount over the virus’s spread in the south.

SEATTLE (AP) — The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced it will begin offering home-testing kits for people in the Seattle area for the new coronavirus in the coming weeks.

The Seattle Times reports that it's not clear when the project will launch, but it's ramping up as quickly as possible.

People who think they've been infected can fill out a questionnaire online and request a test kit if their symptoms are consistent with the illness the virus causes.

Maybe someone should explain to them that, as long as they refuse to test people, our mortality rate will be artificially high and I would think having a higher death rate than other countries would hurt trump more than having more cases. It's not trump's fault the illness made its way to the US, but he is absolutely at fault for covering it up, causing more people to contract the illness than they would under competent leadership.

As usual, the orange shit gibbon only cares how this reflects on him.

So I read a thread on Twitter yesterday that said the number of cases doubles every 6 days ...

... that by early May there will be a million cases, then two million, then four, then eight ...

... and reminded people that there are only a million hospital beds in the country, that 70% or more are already filled ... and that there are a limited number of adequate masks for healthcare workers, and by May none of them will have masks to wear ...

... and I thought ... honest question here ...

Wouldn't it be better to get the disease this month, while there are still hospital beds and masks?

Can I order the virus from Amazon Prime?

I hope y'all are still wearing your seat belts!
