In South Korea, number of recovered patients is rising twice as fast as new infections

TOKYO — South Korea reported another sign that it is turning the corner in the battle against the novel coronavirus on Sunday, as the number of people deemed to have fully recovered rose more than twice as fast as the number of new infections.

While South Korea reported 105 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday, the number of people who had recovered rose by 222, said the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).

On Saturday, the country recorded another encouraging milestone with news that the total number of people who had recovered exceeded the number of people still in quarantine for the first time. Out of the 9,583 confirmed cases of coronavirus in South Korea, 5,033 of them have recovered.

The death toll in the country increased by eight and stands at 152 as of Sunday.

South Korea has won praise for one of the most determined efforts around the globe to test, trace and track every patient who has coronavirus, although the mass surveillance effort has left some people uncomfortable.

Checkpoints set up entering Fla. from Ga. & Ala., in effort to limit spread of COVID-19

All drivers, except semi-trucks, have to pull into a weigh station. Workers from the Florida Department of Health, Florida Department of Transportation and Florida Highway Patrol ask questions about where your trip started and where you are headed.

"Motorists should expect to be directed by law enforcement to enter the weigh station," FDOT said in a release. "Depending upon the motorist’s origin, they will be directed to either proceed back to the Interstate or to pull aside for further screening."

People from Connecticut, Louisiana, New Jersey and New York are being told to self-isolate for 14 days. If they refuse, they could face misdemeanor charges.

The order does not apply to people who are performing military, emergency, health or infrastructure response or anyone involved in commercial activity, including people who live in Georgia and commute to work in Florida, FDOT said.

of note: that H1N1 figure was an after-the-fact calculation of excess deaths possibly caused by the virus. Lab-confirmed deaths in the U.S. were in the 2,000 range -- which covid-19 now exceeds in just weeks. ---> https://washingtonpost.com/politics/202 ... ncomplete/

For Mr. V. (and the rest of us), here's a link to the Florida Department of Health's COVID dashboard: https://experience.arcgis.com/experienc ... db9b25e429

While it does say it's updated at 11:30 am and 6:30 pm (thereabouts) daily, there is a HUUUUGE drop off in reported cases for today. Guess we have to wait for the 6:30 numbers to come in.

This is interesting because you can go county by county and see the breakdown of residents/non-residents who are infected. All of Ron DeSantis' fear he's been spreading about "outsiders" seems not to be supported by the data. Also, too, I suspect these numbers are way underreported.
I completely mistrust the data from DeSantis's health Department.
They could be mostly wrong, but not completely wrong. Which is why I bothered to type the last sentence of my post! Example, when I made the post, Miami-Dade was reporting 3 deaths. We know that a nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital, a 33 year veteran, died. You can be certain her co-workers will make sure her death has been counted, and I think that will be true for the vast number of victims.

This is, nevertheless, and with my caveat, a useful tool. And DeSantis' data undermines his actions.

237 New Yorkers died in the last 24 hours from COVID-19. Two days ago, someone was dying every ten minutes. Yesterday, someone was dying every seven minutes. Today, it’s every six minutes. Every. Six. Minutes.

The only way you can attend Regis is by winning - and maintaining - a full scholarship. The criteria are both academic merit and financial need.

Here's a story about a young man from Detroit who died from COVID19. He was 25 years old and about to graduate from Western Michigan University with a Chemical Engineering degree. His sister says he was refused a test although symptomatic and dismissed by a health professional who told him he had bronchitis. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/ ... 936057001/

I had bookmarked the site that TexasFilly shared for Florida stats. I live in Volusia County. On the right hand side of the screen it lists 59 as the number of cases for Volusia County. When you click on the actual county it opens a small window and gives the "total" cases as 60. The details indicate 59 residents and 1 non-resident. And 96% of Florida cases are residents of Florida.

The situation in France with Raoult Didier and his Chloroquine experiments has gotten weirder and weirder.

He is now essentially saying that of course his first early paper was flawed, but that the emergency circumstances don't leave time to do rigorous science.

He then came out with a new set of data using 80 patients in which his treatment resulted in 80% of the cases resolving without severe symptoms.

...which, if you've been paying attention, is the rate at which untreated cases resolve without severe symptoms.

This branch of the news just keeps getting weirder.
Thanks pal.

Here it is:

French expert says second study shows malaria drug helps fight coronavirus

"A doctor can and must think like a doctor and not like a methodological researcher," Raoult wrote in an article for the French Le Monde daily, defending his methods.

According to his latest study, 65 of the 80 patients treated improved and were discharged from hospital in an average of less than five days. One patient aged 74 was still in intensive care and another aged 86 died.

But his critics say such results were fairly typical of the virus.

Yeah that discussion has been going on down here as well. I don’t generally like conspiracy theories but the reality is they hid or didn’t make much of an effort to count how many people actually died during the hurricane. They still refuse to pay for a study that provides an accurate count.

It’s to be expected that people distrust the low infection numbers the governor is putting out.

Ironically I’ve seen “libertarians” were critical of China for being too draconian in fighting the virus early on, complain that China didn’t do enough now that the virus is over here.
