My takeaways:

-Quarantine is most effective at flattening
-Quarantine plus contact tracing wins
-Hand washing & social distance very helpful
-Half measures, non-compliance weaken effectiveness
-Central markets or city to city travel hurts
-Quarantine length saves lives

Bad news: # of confirmed cases in NYC is now 32,308 with 678 deaths.
Less bad news: a week ago, # of cases was doubling every 3 days. Now it is every 5 days.
This week will be key: shutdown started 14 days ago, so it should be starting to have an impact.

While the curve for total cases in Italy hasn't yet flattened it has become linear. This means that the number of daily new cases is not increasing The next step is getting that number to decrease.

Interesting to watch how Russia is handling it. Because it looks eerily similar to how certain members of the US govt tried to handle it.

Covid-19 in Harris County Jail.

Keri Blakinger
@keribla
The first inmate in the
@HCSOTexas
jail with COVID was arrested by HPD on March 17 for a parole violation.

No new charge, just a parole violation.

He'd been in for 9 days when med staff discovered he had a temperature, officials say.

Test results came back today.

#breaking:
1
He is a 39-year-old, and he had a temperature and a high pulse but wasn't feeling ill.

When staff realized this during a routine med screening on the 26th, they had him tested and put into isolation.

All of the other inmates who were in his tank (could be as many as about 50, exact # unclear) were put into observational quarantine.

There are now ~500 in observational quarantine in the jail total at this point.

About 30 are symptomatic.

Here's the full press release:

For Mr. V. (and the rest of us), here's a link to the Florida Department of Health's COVID dashboard: https://experience.arcgis.com/experienc ... db9b25e429

While it does say it's updated at 11:30 am and 6:30 pm (thereabouts) daily, there is a HUUUUGE drop off in reported cases for today. Guess we have to wait for the 6:30 numbers to come in.

This is interesting because you can go county by county and see the breakdown of residents/non-residents who are infected. All of Ron DeSantis' fear he's been spreading about "outsiders" seems not to be supported by the data. Also, too, I suspect these numbers are way underreported.

How long before the system collapses? :?

N.Y.C.’s 911 System Is Overwhelmed. ‘I’m Terrified,’ a Paramedic Says.
With coronavirus cases mounting, emergency workers are making life-or-death decisions about who goes to a hospital, and who is left behind.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/28/nyre ... s-ems.html
Even as hospitals across New York become inundated with coronavirus cases, some patients are being left behind in their homes because the health care system cannot handle them all, according to dozens of interviews with paramedics, New York Fire Department officials and union representatives, as well as city data.

In a matter of days, the city’s 911 system has been overwhelmed by calls for medical distress apparently related to the virus. Typically, the system sees about 4,000 Emergency Medical Services calls a day.

On Thursday, dispatchers took more than 7,000 calls — a volume not seen since the Sept. 11 attacks. The record for amount of calls in a day was broken three times in the last week.

:snippity:

Three weeks ago, the paramedics said, most coronavirus calls were for respiratory distress or fever. Now the same types of patients, after having been sent home from the hospital, are experiencing organ failure and cardiac arrest.

Liberty University Brings Back Its Students, and Coronavirus, Too
The decision by the school’s president, Jerry Falwell Jr., to partly reopen his evangelical university enraged residents of Lynchburg, Va. Then students started getting sick.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/29/us/p ... lwell.html
So Mr. Falwell — a staunch ally of President Trump and an influential voice in the evangelical world — reopened the university last week, igniting a firestorm, epidemiologically and otherwise. As of Friday, Dr. Eppes said, nearly a dozen Liberty students were sick with symptoms that suggest Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus. Three were referred to local hospital centers for testing. Another eight were told to self-isolate.

“Liberty will be notifying the community as deemed appropriate and required by law,” Mr. Falwell said in an interview on Sunday when confronted with the numbers. He added that any student returning now to campus would be required to self-quarantine for 14 days.

:snippity:

Of the 1,900 students who initially returned last week to campus, he said more than 800 had left. But he said he had “no idea” how many students had returned to off-campus housing.

“If I were them, I’d be more nervous,” he added, because they live in more crowded conditions.

As well you should. The tests are being rationed. And even if you are granted a test, the results are slow to come back. There was a local story yesterday of a woman who was tested Mar 17 and she still has no results.
To which Trump replied, Fuck the law. I don't give a fuck about the law. I want my fucking money.

Emergency Hospital Being Constructed in Central Park

https://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/ne ... witter_NY1
There is an operation underway to build an emergency hospital inside Central Park.

Sunday morning, trucks filled with equipment and supplies parked along 5th Avenue, and workers with the North Carolina based Christian organization Samaritan’s Purse began constructing a 68-bed emergency field hospital across from Mount Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Elliott Tenpenny, the team leader of this field operation, tells NY1 state officials approved the plan after Mount Sinai Hospital reached out for assistance.

The field hospital will be composed of a respiratory care unit with ICU capability. Dr. Tenpenny said highly trained doctors and nurses with experience in infectious diseases will be deployed on a rotating basis.

BREAKING: Texas Governor
@GregAbbott_TX
is now issuing an executive order preventing ANY travel from Louisiana into Texas. This does not prevent emergency, military, or medical personnel. Texas DPS troops will be deployed to entry points across the state.
What about the thousands of trucks incoming from Louisiana every day? Will Texans currently in LA not be able to return? Need details.

Should New Mexico which has relatively few cases close its border with Texas?

A few details-

https://www.khou.com/article/news/healt ... 84660a8e92
Nearly all road travelers from Louisiana into Texas are required to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival under a new executive order issued by Gov. Greg Abbott. The order does not include military, commercial or infrastructure travel. DPS checkpoints have been establish to enforce the new policy.

The order also expands an existing order requiring all air travelers to self-quarantine, which originally included New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and New Orleans. It now also includes Miami, Atalanta, Detroit, Chicago as well as all air travelers from California and Washington state.
