Maryland's Never-Trumper governor ordered the closure of all bars and sit-in restaurants a few hours ago. Also churches, movie theaters, gyms, etc. He also activated the national guard and stressed a zero-tolerance policy for those not following these orders.

But he also prohibited evictions and the turning-off of utilities.

Canada closing border to most non-residents, exempts U.S. citizens

Canada will close its border to most non-residents as the coronavirus pandemic continues to affect the country and the world, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday.

Trudeau declared that only Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be permitted to enter the country, with exemptions being granted for air crews, diplomats, immediate family members of citizens and, “at this time,” U.S. citizens.

“As the virus continues its spread, we’ve decided to take increasingly aggressive steps to keep you and your family safe,” he said during a press conference.

When asked why U.S. citizens were still being allowed across Canada's border, Trudeau said the two countries were "collaborating very closely," adding that "the level of integration of our two countries is quite particular."

"We recognize that the level of integration of our two economies and the coordination that we've had over the past while puts the U.S. in a separate category from the rest of the world," he said.

New York shutting down bars, movie theaters, gyms, and other non-essential businesses effective 8 p.m. tonight

https://riverheadlocal.com/2020/03/16/n ... nnecticut/
All bars, movie theaters, gyms, casinos and race tracks have been ordered to close in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey effective at 8 p.m. today until further notice, the governors of the three states announced in a telephone briefing with the media this morning.

Restaurants and bars can offer takeout and delivery service after the rule takes effect. Dine-in will not be permitted.

Essential businesses — such as supermarkets, pharmacies and gasoline stations — can continue to operate, they said.

Public gatherings are limited to 50 people.

I have to disagree with this. Mrs Somerset arrived in Cebu a month ago and was put into a 14 day quarantine because she passed through Hong Kong's airport. From everything I've seen and heard, the Philippine government has been proactive on this.

Always good advice.
He's in Norman, and the Walmart is the closest option for any kind of shopping. Otherwise, without a vehicle, it's apparently a five and a half mile round trip walk!

Fortunately, he does like to walk.

Houston, Harris County expected to close bars, restrict restaurants

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/h ... socialflow#
Houston and Harris County officials are expected to order the indefinite closure of bars in the city and unincorporated areas, a move intended to slow the spread of the new coronavirus, according to sources with direct knowledge of the discussions.

Officials still were discussing Monday afternoon whether to restrict the number of patrons at local restaurants or limit orders to takeout, delivery and drive-through windows.

Mayor Sylvester Turner and County Judge Lina Hidalgo are scheduled to convene a news conference at 5 p.m.

News of the pending restrictions was met with dismay by some bar owners.
Right before St. Patrick's Day too.

LL Bean closing all stores for the first time in history. Even the flagship store in Freeport, which has been open 24/7/365 for years. (That store has been closed 5 times, never for more than 24 hours.) All year-round employees will still have pay and benefits. They hope to reopen March 29.

To Mainers, this is one sign of the apocalypse.

Ohio has closed:
  • Restaurants (dine in only; delivery/carry out still available for now)
  • Any gathering of more than 50 people
  • Primary election set for March 17 postponed to June 2
  • Schools
A friend just texted me a bit ago asking if I think there will be an election in November. My response was there better be or I'm marching, even if I'm alone.

We’re still aiming for opening our production of King Lear in Original Pronunciation on April 10, a week late, but we may yet have to cancel the show entirely. We have the capacity to seat 50 people spread out 5’ apart, and to wipe down all surfaces, instruments, etc. after every show. But depending on how the next couple weeks play out, it may not be in the cards.

It's all interrelated...
Humbled by a deadly virus, Trump presents a newly somber tone
As many Americans started a new week with shuttered shops, schools and offices, the president traded his trademark defiance for a series of serious warnings.
***
Trump was also deeply alarmed by the economic collapse in China that became apparent early Monday, according to two people close to the White House. Data released late Sunday showed a 13.5 percent decline in China’s industrial output in January and February from a year earlier, as well as a dramatic spike in unemployment. The country has also experienced a widespread suspension of manufacturing since the coronavirus outbreak began in China’s Hubei province in December.

“The president understands numbers and they were explaining to him some of the China economic numbers over the weekend and now he knows what’s coming here,” said one person close to Trump, adding that the drop in manufacturing truly startled the president.

“This is a communist country that sealed off everyone in their apartments and is still seeing those numbers, so it made him realize there’s no way for the U.S. not to suffer those consequences and what he needs to do is whatever he can to get us through this as quickly as possible,” the person added.

This has been brewing a long time but it's here. NBCUniversal = Comcast.
Studio’s Movies in Theaters Will Be Offered for In-Home Rental
Universal is breaking longstanding industry practice to offer “The Hunt,” “The Invisible Man” and “Emma” for streaming.
Movie theater ticket sales fell to an all-time low over the weekend.
By Brooks Barnes and Nicole Sperling March 16, 2020

LOS ANGELES — Universal Pictures said on Monday that it would no longer give theaters an exclusive period of roughly 90 days to play new movies, a break with longstanding Hollywood practice that could have wide-ranging reverberations. The decision, prompted by the coronavirus pandemic and likely to anger theater owners, makes Universal the first old-line studio to become more like Netflix in its approach to film distribution.

“We hope and believe that people will still go to the movies in theaters where available, but we understand that for people in different areas of the world that is increasingly becoming less possible,” Jeff Shell, the chief executive of NBCUniversal, said in a statement.

At least some competing studios are likely to follow. Executives across Hollywood saw the move by Universal as an opening to experiment with a pay-per-view model that would allow consumers to gain immediate or near-immediate access to new movies in their homes for a premium price.

Starting Friday, three Universal movies that have already been released in theaters will become available in homes — for $20 for a 48-hour rental period — through online stores like iTunes and Amazon Prime Video and on cable systems like Comcast, Universal’s parent company. Those films are “The Hunt,” a horror satire that arrived in theaters last weekend; “The Invisible Man,” which has been playing in theaters since Feb. 20; and “Emma,” a new take on the classic Jane Austen novel that arrived in theaters on March 6.
