Just counted 21 empty seats on the GOP side of the Senate, 2 on the Dem side, a couple hours into Schiff's presentation. Some are just stretching their legs, but most are not in the chamber. Some of them have been out of there for a while.

NEW: Chuck Schumer said the idea of a "witness trade" that involves calling Hunter Biden in exchange for John Bolton is "off the table."
Uh this seems like a fair trade.

Hunter could not testify to any of the articles of impeachment. I would fall on that sword.

Hearing raves about Schiff's presentation, wasn't able to see it yet but Toobin said 2nd best he'd ever heard and Chris Matthews was enthusiastic.

Here's his full presentation:

“It’s Like Being in a Room when Someone’s Vacuuming. You Can’t Wait for it to Stop” – BOOM! – Jesse Watters Goes Off on Epic Tirade After Schiff’s Marathon Impeachment Speech (VIDEO)
by Jim Hoft January 22, 2020

Adam Schiff went off on a deranged Trump-Russia screed during his opening arguments at the Senate Impeachment Trial.

Schiff went from lie to conspiracy throughout his 40 minute opening argument.

It was outrageous and insane!

Schiff opened up calling President Trump a “king” and “cheat” and then moved on to assert that President Trump is a puppet of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

This afternoon on The Five Jesse Watters WENT OFF on an epic tirade after Adam Schiff’s marathon impeachment open.
Jesse Watters: The Democrats have done a lot of dumb things in Trump’s first term but putting Adam Schiff on television for two straight hours might be up there with the dumbest. The man looks like a rotten dandelion. Listening to him is like being in the room when someone’s vacuuming. You just can’t wait for it to stop.

WaPo - Jennifer Rubin
Adam Schiff’s brilliant presentation is knocking down excuses to acquit

Given how firmly some Republican senators are ensconced in the right-wing news bubble, and how determined they are to avoid hearing facts that undercut their partisan views, it is possible many of them are hearing the facts on which impeachment is based for the first time. Impeachment manager and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) took them through in meticulous detail the scheme President Trump devised to pressure Ukraine to help him smear former vice president Joe Biden.

Intentionally ignorant Republicans previously may have learned these things from Schiff’s presentation (seriously, if they didn’t hear it from talk radio or state TV, it doesn’t exist):
Trump mentioned the Bidens and Burisma but not “corruption” during the July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Trump followed up with a call to Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, on whether the investigations he demanded would happen.

A text by a Trump appointee to Zelensky’s top aide sent 30 minutes before the July 25 call stressed that Trump was looking for an announcement of an investigation into the Bidens.

When Trump, standing on the White House driveway, told the media that he wanted both Ukraine and China to investigate Joe Biden, he was not pursuing corruption in Ukraine, but rather looking for foreign countries to smear the former vice president.

The draft statement announcing that Ukraine would undertake corruption investigations was rewritten by Sondland and Trump lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani to specifically include Burisma and the 2016 election (i.e., Crowdstrike).

Giuliani openly bragged about interfering in an investigation in Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials threw Trump’s corrupt scheme back in our faces when asked not to investigate their political opponents.

Ukraine was confronted with a cut-off of vital aid in the middle of a hot war.

The aid was only released when Trump was caught (and acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney confirmed it publicly).
Schiff stacked one fact upon another until an impenetrable wall of evidence confronted Republicans. What will their excuse for acquittal be? The facts turn out to be a lot stronger, by gosh, than the House Republican apologists said!

New York Times - Michael D. Shear
In Impeachment Case, Schiff Accuses Trump of Trying ‘to Cheat’ in Election

The House impeachment managers began presenting their oral arguments against President Trump in the Senate trial, arguing that his conduct warranted his removal.

WASHINGTON — The House Democratic impeachment managers presented their case on Wednesday for convicting President Trump and removing him from office on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, opening oral arguments in an already rancorous Senate trial.

Taking the lectern in the well of the Senate as senators sat silently preparing to weigh Mr. Trump’s fate, Representative Adam B. Schiff of California, the lead House prosecutor, accused the president of a “corrupt scheme” to pressure Ukraine for help “to cheat” in the election.

Invoking the nation’s founders and their fears that a self-interested leader might subvert democracy for his own personal gain, Mr. Schiff argued that the president’s conduct was precisely what the framers of the Constitution had in mind when they devised the remedy of impeachment, one he said was “as powerful as the evil it was meant to combat.”

“If not remedied by his conviction in the Senate, and removal from office, President Trump’s abuse of his office and obstruction of Congress will permanently alter the balance of power among the branches of government,” Mr. Schiff said in his opening remarks. “The president has shown that he believes that he’s above the law and scornful of constraint.”

As Mr. Schiff began what is expected to be an uninterrupted, three-day presentation of evidence by the House prosecutors, Mr. Trump — impatient for his legal team to have a chance to mount a vigorous defense of his behavior — seethed from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Politico: Dems unload 'overwhelming' impeachment case on the Senate — even as they press for more

House managers work to balance their case with urgent pleas for new witnesses and documents.

Count me firmly in the "Let H. Biden testify if we can get trump witnesses, Oh wait, they're going to cut campaign ads featuring the VP's son and crucify Biden with the visuals? Crap! I don't know what to think" camp.

Grist for the mill:

Claire McCaskell has been all over MSNBC yesterday and today saying that the clamor for Hunter B is a sham; that the R's can call him or anyone else in to testify any time they want, as they run the Senate. Her point being that they do not want him to testify at all, because they will look like idiots.

She also points out that getting him there is not something that would happen overnight (resolutions, votes, letters, logistics), and would blow up their plan to bury the trial and have the funeral before State of the Union (Feb 4

She has said it about four times over 24 hours, and none of the very knowledgeable lawyers have contradicted her.

Me too. Alas, no cameras allowed on the Senators. Just the presenter and whatever is on the vid display.

Edited to add: I'm sure folks all over the Interwebs will be pearl clutching and saying how Nadler is just riling up Lindsey and now he'll NEVER vote to remove. And yes, the R's will show vids of Schumer and whoever saying whatever they said about Clinton when their turn comes. I could care less.

This is NOT about removing 45. Never was, never will be. This is about taking a stand; about showing the public that they are taking a stand.
