Democrats ask judge to force McGahn to comply with subpoena

Lawyers for the House Judiciary Committee urged a federal judge on Thursday to force former White House counsel Don McGahn to testify before Congress about President Trump’s possible obstruction of justice, arguing that his refusal to comply is harming House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry.

Democrats’ counsel said that even though McGahn’s role in the obstruction investigation carried out by former Special Counsel Robert Mueller was described at length in Mueller’s report, lawmakers still need to independently evaluate his testimony.

“The information is relevant and important to the impeachment inquiry,” as well as the committee’s legislative and oversight duties, Megan Barbero, a lawyer for the House committee, told Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, an Obama appointee to the federal district court in D.C.

And I'm sure most of the committee members and White House, plus some of their contacts in the press know who the whistleblower is. They can't make any attacks because no one wants to be the one to out the identity. The NYT got blasted just for saying it was a guy in the CIA assigned to the White House. Eventually someone like Gorka will be dumb enough to take it and run with it.

New talking points:

New: Trump campaign talking points on Vindman described as “delusional” by one Republican who viewed them. Talking points say “Vindman’s testimony supports President Trump’s message...” and that “the released transcript... was accurate.” And “no quid pro quo on the call.”

That alone would not be illegal, just politically inappropriate in case of an allie. What made the conversation turn improper was the fact that Teh Donald in his official capacity(???) attempted to bribe Ukraine for very personal purposes. This staffer neeeds to think about it longer.

Morrison confirms quid pro quo. That’s at least the third corroborating witness. Public hearings kick off soon.

Today is a good day for people not named Trump.

Have they moved the goalposts again? I'm losing track...

One reason why the 'quid pro quo' narrative is a fairy tale:

Not only were Ukraine officials unaware aid was even being delayed until a month AFTER the 7/25 phone call... the aid was released WITHOUT any new investigations.

This impeachment case has no basis in reality.

WaPo - Greg Sargent: Tim Morrison just confirmed the quid pro quo. That’s the big story here. ...

Here’s the most important part of Morrison’s opening statement ...
ABC News: 1st current White House official to cooperate with House impeachment investigators willing to testify publicly: Source

Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the first current White House official to cooperate with House impeachment investigators and appear on Capitol Hill for a closed-door deposition, is willing to testify publicly in the next phase of the inquiry, according to a source familiar with his thinking.
I posted this earlier, but I'd like to keep these WH guys strung together:
New York Times: White House Aide Confirms He Saw Signs of a Quid Pro Quo on Ukraine ...

WASHINGTON — A National Security Council aide testified on Thursday that a top diplomat who was close to President Trump told him that a package of military assistance for Ukraine would not be released until the country committed to investigating Mr. Trump’s political rivals, corroborating a key episode at the center of the impeachment inquiry.

The closed-door deposition by Timothy Morrison, who announced his resignation on Wednesday on the eve of his appearance before impeachment investigators, suggests that a Trump-appointed ambassador proposed a quid pro quo in which security assistance money allocated by Congress would be provided only in exchange for the political investigations the president was seeking. His account confirmed the one given last week by Ambassador William B. Taylor Jr., the top American diplomat in Ukraine, during his private testimony.

Collin Peterson is a Blue Dog Democrat.
Peterson represents MN-7, which has a Cook PVI of R+12. (The current president won it in 2016 by a 2-1 margin.)

Peterson won, in both 2016 and 2018, 52%-48%.

I'm told that Capitol Police is investigating suspicious packages in House office buildings that were dropped off by the NRCC after the impeachment inquiry vote.

The takeaway is that, in districts that the current president won in 2016 that currently are held by Democratic representatives, 29 of 31 voted in favor of the inquiry.

Ugh.

NRCC campaign prank leads to suspicious package investigation
Capitol Hill police were called to investigate suspicious packages outside the offices of several House Democrats on Thursday after staffers for the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) delivered "moving boxes" to several lawmakers.

NRCC spokesman Bob Salera confirmed to The Hill that their staffers had placed the boxes at the offices of Reps. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), Conor Lamb (D-Pa.) and others, and said in a statement: “We know House Democrats love investigations, but why are they looking a gift horse in the mouth? These moving boxes will come in handy next November when they’re booted from office for impeaching the president.”

The Beltway's 'Whistleblower' Furor Obsesses Over One Name
By Paul Sperry, RealClearInvestigations
October 30, 2019, 4:21 PM Eastern

For a town that leaks like a sieve, Washington has done an astonishingly effective job keeping from the American public the name of the anonymous “whistleblower" who triggered impeachment proceedings against President Trump — even though his identity is an open secret inside the Beltway. Eric Ciaramella as a class of 2004 Connecticut prep student: He later moved on to Yale and the White House. Now he could be at the center of an impeachment storm.

More than two months after the official filed his complaint, pretty much all that’s known publicly about him is that he is a CIA analyst who at one point was detailed to the White House and is now back working at the CIA.

But the name of a government official fitting that description — Eric Ciaramella — has been raised privately in impeachment depositions, according to officials with direct knowledge of the proceedings, as well as in at least one open hearing held by a House committee not involved in the impeachment inquiry. Fearing their anonymous witness could be exposed, Democrats this week blocked Republicans from asking more questions about him and intend to redact his name from all deposition transcripts.

RealClearInvestigations is disclosing the name because of the public’s interest in learning details of an effort to remove a sitting president from office. [BULLSHIT.] Further, the official's status as a “whistleblower” is complicated by his being a hearsay reporter of accusations against the president, one who has “some indicia of an arguable political bias … in favor of a rival political candidate" -- as the Intelligence Community Inspector General phrased it circumspectly in originally fielding his complaint.

Federal documents reveal that the 33-year-old Ciaramella, a registered Democrat held over from the Obama White House, previously worked with former Vice President Joe Biden and former CIA Director John Brennan, a vocal critic of Trump who helped initiate the Russia “collusion” investigation of the Trump campaign during the 2016 election. Further, Ciaramella (pronounced char-a-MEL-ah) left his National Security Council posting in the White House’s West Wing in mid-2017 amid concerns about negative leaks to the media. He has since returned to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

The Federalist (they should be prohibited from using that name, what jerks):
Anti-Trump ‘Whistleblower’ Worked With DNC Operative Who Sought Dirt On Trump From Ukrainian Officials
OCTOBER 30, 2019 By Madeline Osburn
A new report from RealClearInvestigations reveals that the anti-Trump “whistleblower” who prompted the current impeachment proceedings against President Trump is a registered Democrat who worked with a Democratic National Committee opposition researcher who dug up dirt on the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.

Federal documents reveal that the whistleblower, Eric Ciaramella, previously worked in the Obama administration with former Vice President Joe Biden and former CIA Director John Brennan. RealClear reports that Ciaramella remained there into the Trump administration, and headed the Ukraine desk at the National Security Council, eventually transitioning into the West Wing, until June 2017. He then “left his National Security Council posting in the White House’s West Wing in mid-2017 amid concerns about negative leaks to the media. He has since returned to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia,” RealClearInvestigations reported. Ciaramella is a Yale graduate who reportedly speaks Russian, Ukrainian, and Arabic.

Officials told RealClear that Ciaramella strongly opposed Trump’s foreign policy. “He didn’t exactly hide his passion with respect to what he thought was the right thing to do with Ukraine and Russia, and his views were at odds with the president’s policies,” a former senior White House official said. Politico reported on a Ukrainian-American woman who consulted for the Democratic National Committee, and “met with top officials in the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington in an effort to expose ties between Trump, top campaign aide Paul Manafort and Russia.” The woman, Alexandra Chalupa, was paid $412,000 from 2004 to June 2016 by the DNC. Ciaramella invited Chalupa to meetings and events at the White House, RealClear reported, documents confirming one occasion in November 2015. She also visited the White House with Ukrainian lobbyists seeking aid from Obama.

Chalupa said she shared her findings with both the DNC and Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Politico reports that “Chalupa told a senior DNC official that, when it came to Trump’s campaign, ‘I felt there was a Russia connection.'” Chalupa also said that the Ukrainian embassy worked directly with reporters digging for Trump-Russia ties. Before Ciaramella filed his “whistleblower complaint,” he sought “guidance” from House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff’s staff and other Obama-era NSC staff recently employed by Schiff’s office. Before this “guidance” was public knowledge, the Chairman was adamant on hearing the “whistleblower” testimony. “We need to speak with the whistleblower,” Schiff and other Democrats proclaimed. As soon as Ciaramella’s partisanship and collaboration was discovered, Schiff and the Democrats flipped to preventing the testimony from happening and moving their hearings behind closed doors.
