Foreign Policy
Here’s the Memo That Blew Up the NSC

The memo at the heart of the latest blowup at the National Security Council paints a dark picture of media, academics, the “deep state,” and other enemies allegedly working to subvert U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a copy of the document obtained by Foreign Policy.

The seven-page document, which eventually landed on the president’s desk, precipitated a crisis that led to the departure of several high-level NSC officials tied to former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. The author of the memo, Rich Higgins, who was in the strategic planning office at the NSC, was among those recently pushed out.

The full memo, dated May 2017, is titled “POTUS & Political Warfare.” It provides a sweeping, if at times conspiratorial, view of what it describes as a multi-pronged attack on the Trump White House.

Trump is being attacked, the memo says, because he represents “an existential threat to cultural Marxist memes that dominate the prevailing cultural narrative.” Those threatened by Trump include “‘deep state’ actors, globalists, bankers, Islamists, and establishment Republicans.”

The memo is part of a broader political struggle inside the White House between current National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster and alt-right operatives th whatth (sic) a nationalist worldview who believe the Army general and his crew are subverting the president’s agenda.

:o These people sound like the most deluded, wacko commenters at the Post & Email or Birther Report. It's even scarier than we probably could imagine that these people have Trump's ear. I am sure there are many left inside the administration and Bannon is one of them.

If members of the NSC think the media and academia are the biggest threats to the United States, Russia might as well park some tanks on the White House lawn.

The members of the NSC who think that are getting fired.

Also, our adversaries read the same newspapers we read, so any public disclosures from a top-secret intelligence and strategy shop should probably be taken with a few grains of salt.

Was this written before or after Brannon's removal from the NSC? This definitely has Brannon written all over it.

That they were even on the NSC for six months shows how actual national security has been compromised.

Written by some Trump bootlicker. SInce Trump's name features prominently in the last sycophantic paragraph, perhaps Trump will have the attention span to read it:
CONCLUSION.
The recent turn of events give rise to the observation that the defense of President Trump is the
defense of America. In the same way President Lincoln was surrounded by political opposition both
inside and outside of his wire, in both overt and covert forms, so too is President Trump. Had Lincoln
failed, so too would have the Republic. The administration has been maneuvered into a constant backpedal
by relentless political warfare attacks structured to force him to assume a reactive posture that
assures inadequate responses. The president can either drive or be driven by events; it's time for him to
drive them

Slate
National Security Adviser McMaster on Charlottesville: “Of Course it Was Terrorism”

When a car plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters in Charlottesville on Saturday, killing one person, there was lots of back-and-forth about whether that action could be classified as terrorism. For National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster though, there really isn’t much to debate. “Certainly I think we can confidently call it a form of terrorism,” McMaster said on NBC’s Meet the Press. “What terrorism is is the use of violence to incite terror and fear, and of course it was terrorism.”

McMaster espoused the same message on ABC’s This Week although he seemed to take a more careful stance, suggesting the killing was more a “criminal” act than terrorism. “I certainly think any time that you commit an attack against people to incite fear, it is terrorism. It meets the definition of terrorism,” he said. "What you see here, is a criminal act. A criminal act that may be motivated by this hatred and bigotry.” ...

By describing vehicular as at least a form of terrorism, McMaster certainly went further than President Donald Trump, who has been harshly criticized for saying that “many sides” were to blame for the violence in Charlottesville on Saturday. Even though he didn’t specifically mention it, McMaster insisted that the president intended to denounce racists when he addressed the violence.

“He condemned hatred and bigotry on all sides, and that includes white supremacists and neo-Nazis,” McMaster said on NBC. “I think it's clear—I know it's clear in his mind and ought to be clear to all Americans: We cannot tolerate, obviously, that bigotry, that hatred that is rooted in ignorance, ignorance of what America stands for, what America is.”

CBS News
White House officials express "great concern" about threats to NSC staff

Two White House officials, including one former official, say that there is "great concern" regarding the level of threats being made against U.S. officials who serve on the Trump Administration's National Security Council, CBS News' Margaret Brennan reports.

A White House official told CBS News that it is "disheartening" to see the uptick in verbal and online attacks on members who come from security-focused backgrounds, not political ones.

The unusual scrutiny has targeted individuals who are serving one to two year terms on loan from the Departments of Justice, Defense, State or other agencies. In past administrations, individuals in these positions often flew under the radar. There has been a noticeable uptick in threats for those who currently report to National Security Adviser General H.R. McMaster.

"McMaster is used to facing real bullets so verbal ones are not going to impact him," a White House official said in regard to a sustained online campaign against him. The official noted that a statement of support yesterday for McMaster from Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, was very much appreciated.

On Monday, McCain publicly called on President Trump to defend McMaster against similar virulent and personal attacks that originated from what he described as the same alt-right groups who precipitated the Charlottesville attack.

The Hill
Breitbart goes after McMaster ...

Breitbart News, the media outlet helmed by President Trump's former chief strategist Stephen Bannon, published an article on Sunday casting national security adviser H.R. McMaster as soft on Islamist extremism and terrorism.

The article came just two days after Bannon's departure from the White House. He returned to Breitbart later on Friday.

Bannon's tenure in the White House was often turbulent, and he is said to have frequently feuded with the president's other aides — McMaster in particular. ...

The Breitbart article, headlined "H.R. McMaster Endorsed Book That Advocates Quran-Kissing Apology Ceremonies," claims that the Army lieutenant general threw his support behind a book advising U.S. military personnel to avoid desecrating the Quran, so as not to inflame religious tensions with Muslim populations in countries where American troops are deployed.

It also quotes a blurb for the book that was reportedly authored by McMaster, in which he writes that "terrorist organizations use a narrow and irreligious ideology to recruit undereducated and disenfranchised people to their cause."

The White House deferred questions on the Breitbart article to the National Security Council. An NSC spokesman did not immediately return The Hill's requests for comment.

The decision was also driven by the White House's challenge attracting top talent for jobs in the administration due to Trump's "blacklist" of individuals who have criticized the President, his personality and the Russia investigation, according to a senior Republican source.

Death of McMaster’s father being investigated as suspicious: report

Philadelphia authorities are investigating the death of the father of former White House national security adviser H.R. McMaster, ABC6 reports.

According to the Philadelphia department of health, the former official's father, H.R. McMaster Sr., died on April 13 of blunt force trauma to the head.

While health officials have ruled his death to be an accident, investigators have labeled the death suspicious, and are looking into whether there could have been institutional neglect in treating him by the retirement community where he lived.

The 84-year-old Korean War veteran reportedly did not receive proper care at the Cathedral Village retirement home, where he was living after suffering a stroke.

The Philadelphia police's homicide unit is looking into allegations that McMaster Sr. had fallen and was placed on a chair and neglected. Employees also reportedly told the McMaster family that records related to his death had been falsified.

Although this is a sad situation, it is kind of amusing to think of the Russian SVR hit squad being ordered to assassinate H.R. McMaster and then killing the wrong one.
