Time for some wild, and totally baseless speculation.

because, why not?

what if someone over at State has been destroying records and someone from the IG office knows this?

So what is up with Gorka and Pompeo anyhow? I realize this is from the Wash Times, but these direct Gorka quotes shows him being extremely sycophantic and, no surprise, egotistical...
Sebastian Gorka: 'A certain congressman said I should be the next national security adviser'

“A certain congressman said I should be the next national security adviser. I’d love to see that congressman tweet it out. That would be most amusing to watch the heads explode amongst the never-Trump and liberal elite,” Mr. Gorka said.

“Secretary Pompeo should be dual-hatted,” Mr. Gorka said on his radio show. “We don’t need the massive duality and duplicity, the duplication, the duplicative mission sets of doing national security, foreign policy advice in the White House and running the State Department. So my vote is in. Mike Pompeo, tap him on the shoulder.”

https://amp.washingtontimes.com/news/20 ... r-says-co/
Can't lie -my head would explode if Gorka was somehow renamed to any WH position...because hahahaholyshitwtf but it is actually conceivable...

And the actual NatSec Advisor is maintaining a very low profile apparently - zero news search hits since his appointment except for stories about attending a racist uni. in So. Africa! From negotiating the release of a political prisoner rap music artist to hiding behind the White House drapes...

Even if the State IG goes to the Hill and tells them Pompeo broke all the laws ever, a few points remain salient:

1) The DOJ won't prosecute.
2) The Senate wouldn't convict if the House impeached Pompeo.
3) Trump loves him and will not fire him.

Pompeo isn't going anywhere unless and until he decides he wants to run for that KS senate seat.

Ukraine seems to have moved the impeachment needle significantly, even for a few Republicans (out there). If it stays or moves upward, at what point does McConnell cut his losses if people start to see (!!!) the party tainted by the scandals/corruption? Not a foregone conclusion, but people weren't liking even Trump's version of events, and now there seems to be a lot of scurrying to cover up . . . something.

I think that right now, the optics of the situation suck for the White House.

If evidence of an attempted cover up is disclosed then all bets are off.

Pompeo was so unpopular among many staffers at CIA for his bullying and outbursts that two well-placed sources tell us his security detail had an “Emancipation Party” after he left.

I agree the optics are terrible, but I think Giuliani is the obvious patsy here, not Pompeo.

Apparently Volker is still going to Capitol Hill tomorrow...
Pompeo’s plan appears to have backfired. Despite the secretary’s efforts to block several of his current and former officials from speaking to Congress, Volker is set to go to Capitol Hill on Thursday with the backing of a cadre of current and former diplomats. Some of those diplomats spoke to The Daily Beast and requested anonymity because they feared reprisals from Pompeo and other Trump administration officials.

I can't bring myself to listen to Pompeo any more than I can listen to trump, so is it safe to assume Pompeo reiterated that trump's call to the Ukrainian president was the most perfect presidential call evah?

If Pompeo ever wanted to get more hated within
@StateDept
this line to
@GStephanopoulos
today is certainly going to do it: "I think Bill Burns must be auditioning to be Elizabeth Warren's secretary of state." (Burns is a revered former career official who served under Ds and Rs)

The whole interview is astonishingly political for a Secy of State, who is supposed to represent the USA. Jabs at Obama, digs at the fact that GS worked for a D president, defensive in the extreme. The mild-mannered and measured Burns spoke for many within State w/ his article

Wow. Bill Burns is the most respected diplomat of our time. Cheap shots like this from Pompeo is no way to rally support in his building. He obviously doesn’t care. His audience is just one person.

HE has always been a pompous asshole.

I witnessed it upclose and personal when he refused to shake my hand because I had a friends don't let friends don't vote republican or I only sleep with Democrats.

Anyway, he purposely walked away after shaking hands with everyone of my family that was around me and stepped away from me. I was in the middle.

Pompeo’s goal is to expel from government, by whatever means it takes, high-ranking and valuable career State Department employees. He’s succeeding. Pompeo/Trump can then replace them with ignorant and corrupt hacks like Sondland and his ilk. Only those pledging absolute fealty to Trump need apply.
