Governor Candidate Calls Himself 'Louisiana's Donald Trump': Supports Trump 'Against These Liberal Lunatics'

President Donald Trump won the state of Louisiana in the 2016 election with 58 percent of the vote. Now, a successful businessman from Baton Rouge who is a political outsider hopes to ride Trump's coattails in a race for governor this fall.

Eddie Rispone, a wealthy Republican, unveiled a 30-second ad laying out his platform that includes protecting constitutional rights, banning sanctuary cities and putting a stop to giving benefits to illegal immigrants in the Bayou State.

Rispone says he has given money to Trump's campaign, and that he supports the president "against these liberal lunatics."

"I'm Eddie Rispone. I supported President Trump against Hillary [Clinton], gave him money, put a bumper sticker on my truck and I support our president more than ever against these liberal lunatics running now," Rispone started out in his ad.

Anthony Ramirez, the communications director for Rispone, told the USA Today network in Louisiana that "We think the similarities between Eddie and President Trump are clear. Both are conservatives and both are outsiders with serious business backgrounds, so you could say Eddie is Louisiana's Donald Trump."

His big talking point is that he's a successful outsider businessman.

And we all know how well that worked out with Nagin.

Politico
Democrat Edwards will face runoff in Louisiana governor's race

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, fell short of the majority of the vote needed to clinch reelection in Saturday's all-party primary and will face Republican businessman Eddie Rispone in a one-on-one general election next month.

Edwards was unable to pass the 50 percent threshold; he received 47 percent of the votes cast, according to the AP, with 99 percent of precincts reporting. Rispone, meanwhile, held off a fellow Republican, Rep. Ralph Abraham, 27 percent to 24 percent, to capture second place and earn a head-to-head shot against Edwards on Nov. 16.

The outcome of the primary sets up a potentially very competitive general election. While pre-primary polls showed Edwards with significant leads over both Republicans in possible runoffs, GOP candidates combined for more than half the vote on Saturday.

"Over half of Louisiana voters went to the polls today and cast a ballot for someone other than John Bel Edwards," noted Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts, the chairman of the Republican Governors Association, who added that Rispone "will unite Republicans and all Louisianans who want to build a better future for their state."

RSBN is grifting and fawning at the Louisiana rally tonight, they're saying Donald's going to be back again before the election. This venue is 7500 5000 seats, a lot smaller than the 20K in KY (but they have people on the floor). Kayleigh stopped by to say she's pregnant but she Donald is more important. :koolaid:

Politico
RNC plunges into Louisiana gov's race amid signs of trouble

The party is spending $1 million on turnout in the final days ahead of Saturday's election. ...

The last-minute spending doubles the committee’s investment in the race, where Republican Eddie Rispone is trying to unseat Democratic incumbent John Bel Edwards. President Donald Trump is set to headline a rally for Rispone in Louisiana on Thursday evening, barreling ahead despite worries within the GOP that Edwards is a slight favorite to win.

Trump had bet that a GOP sweep in three gubernatorial races this fall would project political strength in the face of impeachment. But after Republican Gov. Matt Bevin’s apparent defeat in Kentucky last week, and with Rispone locked in a neck-and-neck race, the president is facing the possibility of losing two out of three.

The Thursday rally will be the third time Trump has campaigned for Republicans in the gubernatorial contest. He has also recorded get-out-vote videos and robocalls, and on Friday Vice President Mike Pence is expected to call into Louisiana radio stations to make a late pitch for Rispone. It's an extraordinary level of involvement for a president whose own election is less than a year away.

The RNC has spent $2 million and deployed 60 paid staffers to try to unseat Edwards, a prime GOP target given the heavy Republican tilt of the state. The committee’s latest spending is for final get-out-the vote efforts, according to a party official. The RNC is closely aligned with the president’s political operation. ...

Much of the Republican consternation surrounds increased turnout among black voters during early voting, which concluded Saturday. African Americans accounted for 31 percent of early voters in the runoff, an increase from 25 percent during the first round of voting in October, in which candidates from all parties competed with the top two advancing. Democrats accounted for 46 percent of early runoff voters, up from 44 percent in the primary.

Donald is way off his game at his rally tonight, even the crowd seems a bit confused. He's trying to throw the sink at Bel Edwards but his heart doesn't seem into it. Now he doesn't like impeachment because of "his family". When he introduces Scalise, he said he and Melania went to the hospital the first night and he was surprised Steve's wife was so upset and crying... Donald said he knows a lot of guys whose wives wouldn't cry at all if that happened. John Kennedy beclowned himself again, proudly called himself a "proud Deplorable" and called DC folks "goat's milk latte drinkers" and "avacado toast eaters". the slogan he just threw out was: "Unless you're happy with crappy vote for Eddie Rispone". He used his "happy with crappy" line over and over. Nuts.

The Hill
Trump knocks testimony from 'Never Trumpers' at Louisiana rally

President Trump on Thursday attacked Democratic lawmakers in personal terms and ridiculed the first two witnesses to testify publicly in the House's impeachment inquiry as "Never Trumpers."

In his first campaign rally since the Wednesday hearing, Trump riffed about the spectacle and insisted to a crowd of adoring supporters that he had done nothing wrong.

"The absolutely crazed lunatics, the Democrats, radical left and their media partners standing right back there are pushing the deranged impeachment witch hunt for doing nothing wrong," Trump said during the event in Bossier City, La.

Trump briefly addressed the testimony of diplomat William Taylor and State Department official George Kent, who told the House Committees about their concerns regarding Trump's policy in Ukraine, the focus on investigations into his political rivals and the actions of the president's personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani.

"You saw yesterday how about when they asked these two Never Trumpers, 'what exactly do you think you impeach him for?'" Trump said. "And they stood there and went like, 'what?'"

Excellent POLITICO story about the race, this is going to be close... this is really well written and gets into great detail about what's going on.
Can Trump Win Governor of Louisiana?
He’s not officially on the ballot, but he’s desperate for proof that voters love him enough to take down a popular Democrat.
By JESSICA ROSGAARD 11/16/2019 06:34 AM EST
Jessica Rosgaard is a journalist who lives in New Orleans. She covers politics at the local, state and federal level for WWNO, and is editor of Capitol Access, Louisiana’s statewide legislative report.

From their matching red ties to their matching rhetoric, President Trump and Eddie Rispone, the Republican challenger to Louisiana’s incumbent governor, John Bel Edwards, have tried to erase any distinction between them.

“You need to fire your far-left governor,” Trump told the crowd of nearly 14,000 on Thursday night in Bossier City.

“We have to fire our liberal, socialist-leaning governor, John Bel Edwards,” Rispone said when Trump gave him the microphone at the CenturyLink Center.

While it is Rispone’s name that appears on the ballot Saturday for governor of Louisiana, in many respects it is Trump’s reputation on the line, and that is by choice. Trump has injected himself into the governor’s race with unusual vigor, hoping for a state-flipping win that he can take credit for. Unseating Edwards would do a lot to erase the sting of the public impeachment hearings and the news that the incumbent Republican he had backed in the Kentucky governor’s race had earlier Thursday finally conceded defeat. “ I really need you … to send a message to the corrupt Democrats in Washington,” a somewhat subdued Trump urged the audience. “So you’ve gotta give me a big win, please. OK?”

Dave Wasserman is terrific, he called Kentucky first. Here are a few of his most recent tweets. Donald was there four times, this seems like a heavy lift but who knows in this climate. I think Edwards has made a great point... Bobby Jindal left LA with a $2 billion deficit, Edwards has made it into a $200 million surplus. If people are voting in their own interest they'll keep him. Early voting was much higher than usual and African American voters overperformed in EV.

While writing the post, Dave had one more tweet:

Breaking: Caldwell Parish 100% in. Edwards (D) needed 26.3% per my benchmarks. He got 25.1%. Looks like another close race brewing. #LAGOV

The good news for Edwards (D): turnout is *down* from primary in Caldwell Parish (heavily R), but looks considerably *up* in completed/nearly completed parishes where Edwards is winning. #LAGOV

I think Edwards wins by about 35,000. Orleans is heavily Democratic (90-10) and with less than half the vote reported in that parish Edwards is ahead about 70,000 to 7,000. East Baton Rouge is 2-1 Democratic and only half its precincts have reported. Edwards has a 30,000 vote lead there.
