4 GOPs Drop Out Of 50th Race, Back Issa For Hunter’s Seat
Thursday, September 26, 2019

Former congressman Darrell Issa announced Thursday that he is entering the race for Congressional District 50.

Issa, 65, held a morning news conference to announce the launch of his campaign and was joined by El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells, Temecula Mayor Matt Rahn, former Escondido Mayor Sam Abed and former U.S. Navy SEAL Larry Wilske, who were all running for the seat before the announcement.

All four candidates elected to drop out of the race and throw their support behind Issa, who also received an endorsement from San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob.

The race also includes former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio and state Sen. Brian Jones, R-Santee.

Issa declined a re-election run in the 49th District in 2018 after winning his 2016 bid by less than one percentage point. Last September, President Donald Trump nominated him to be the director of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, but his Senate confirmation process has remained stalled since then.

Issa met with Trump last week to inform him that he would not continue to pursue confirmation to the senate administration post and would instead launch his campaign to return to Congress.

"I am tremendously grateful for the confidence you placed in me by nominating me to serve in your administration, but after more than a year of delay caused by partisan obstructionism, I am ready to move forward with an alternative opportunity to return to public service," Issa wrote in a letter to the president this week.
Campa-Najjar, meanwhile, never really stopped running for the seat and is likely the Democrats' best hope of flipping it. In a statement, Campa- Najjar said Issa entering the race shows the district, and Hunter in particular, is vulnerable to be flipped. ... 3Jqh7Gl0Dw

San Diego Union-Tribune
Rep. Duncan Hunter to plead guilty in campaign finance scandal, leave Congress

After years of denials and claims he was the target of a political witch hunt, Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, is scheduled to appear in federal court Tuesday morning to plead guilty in a sweeping campaign finance investigation.

The announcement was posted on the U.S. District Court docket Monday morning, then KUSI aired an interview with Hunter in which he said he will plead guilty to one of the 60 criminal charges against him. He suggested that he is likely to spend time in custody.

“The plea I accepted is misuse of my own campaign funds, of which I pled guilty to only one count,” Hunter told the station. “I think it’s important that people know that I did make mistakes. I did not properly monitor or account for my campaign money. I justify my plea with the understanding that I am responsible for my own campaign and my own campaign money.”

The reversal comes nearly six months after Hunter’s wife and former campaign manager, Margaret Hunter, admitted to her role in a widespread scheme that saw the couple allegedly spend more than $200,000 in campaign donations on family expenses like vacations, gas, groceries, school lunches and oral surgery. Such spending is prohibited to prevent undue influence by contributors. ...

“I’m confident that the transition will be a good one,” he told KUSI. “My office is going to remain open. We’re going to pass it off to whoever takes this seat next. I think it’s important to keep the seat a Republican seat.”

Ammar Campa-Najjar is the Democrat nominee (again) for this race.

His odds are slim, I suppose. But it would be so satisfying to see him win. Not only because it would mean Issa going down, but also because Republicans tried to smear him as a "security threat" in his 2018 race - though born in California, Mr. Campa-Najjor is part Palestinian. :boxing:
Am I being detained?
