The Latest: GOP Sen. Roberts of Kansas won’t run in 2020

11:10 a.m.

Longtime Republican Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas will not seek re-election in 2020, setting up an intense political scramble to replace him.

A person with knowledge of the 82-year-old senator’s decision says Roberts will make the announcement Friday. The person declined to be named, saying Roberts wanted to make the announcement himself.

Roberts has spent decades in Congress but faced pressure to step aside in part because he would have been 84 when facing voters. He also faced grueling primary and general election contests in 2014.

Roberts began his Capitol Hill career as an aide in 1967. He won a U.S. House seat representing western Kansas in 1980 and was elected to the Senate in 1996. But his longevity became a liability during his 2014 campaign.

WaPo
Sen. Pat Roberts announces he won’t seek reelection in 2020 in another departure of a GOP senator known for bipartisanship

The blunt-speaking Kansan was first elected to the Senate in 1996 and has served as chairman of the Agriculture Committee. Roberts recently shepherded a new farm bill into law that every Senate Democrat voted for, a rare occurrence in a fractious Congress.

Roberts, 82, barely survived a primary challenge in 2014 and won reelection after Republicans spent more than $10 million on the race. His announcement of his planned departure comes weeks after another longtime senator, Republican Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, said he would retire at the end of his term.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

Looks like Failed Kansas governor candidate has filed to run in the US Senate Election. He did so by misspelling his own name.

Now Kris would call this election fraud

They weren't thrilled in Kansas with his running for governor last year. I don't think this will make republicans in the state happy either. They now have a Democratic governor; next up--Democratic Senator.
