Bill Weld (R) 2020

Rolling Stone
The Republican Who Wants to Defeat ‘Malignant Narcissist’ Trump

Former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld seeks to end a presidency he sees as “calculated to destroy the interest of the United States” ...

Today, Weld himself is the protagonist in a plot that 20 years ago no fiction editor would have greenlighted because it would have strained all bounds of believability: A former New England governor launches a Kamikaze 2020 primary campaign against a corrupt Republican president who is accused of bedding porn stars, dangling pardons for his henchmen — and may just be a Russian asset.

In our democracy’s only-too-real present-day crisis, President Trump is refashioning Republicanism into a cult of personality. And Weld, for one, is having none of it, insisting the Party of Lincoln can’t go without a fight. “I am going to rage against the dying of the light,” he tells Rolling Stone. Weld says he’s trying to uphold the principles of integrity, decency and fairness that first attracted him to public service in the GOP of the 1960s.

In prosecuting the case against Trump, Weld, 73, has relevant experience. He was counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during Watergate, and he later ran the criminal division at the Department of Justice under Ronald Reagan. No stranger to national campaigns, he stood as the vice presidential candidate on the Libertarian Party ticket headed by fellow-former GOP governor Gary Johnson in 2016. The pair won more than 4.5 million votes, a record for that party.

Now laying the groundwork for a 2020 presidential bid as a Republican, Weld believes he can unseat a president he likens to a character out of the Stanley Kubrick horror film A Clockwork Orange — a “crazy clown.” Weld launched his exploratory committee in February, and started polling at 8 percent against Trump — with another 30 percent of Republicans saying Weld could win their votes.

Associated Press
Ex-Romney Aide Is Working for Likely Trump Challenger

Nashua, N.H. (AP) -- The top strategist for Sen. Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign is working for a likely Republican challenger to President Donald Trump.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld told The Associated Press on Friday that Stuart Stevens is his general consultant as he explores a primary bid against Trump. Stevens joins former New Hampshire GOP chairwoman Jennifer Horn, who is working as an adviser to Weld's possible campaign.

Weld formed a presidential exploratory committee in February. He said Friday that he'd make a final decision on challenging Trump in late April or early May.

Republican William Weld launches primary challenge against Trump

Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld (R) officially launched a long-shot primary challenge against President Trump on Monday.

Weld, the Libertarian Party’s vice presidential candidate in 2016, did not mention Trump in a statement announcing his candidacy.

“In these times of great political strife, when both major parties are entrenched in their ‘win at all cost’ battles, the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering,” Weld said.

“It is time for patriotic men and women across our great nation to stand and plant a flag. It is time to return to the principles of Lincoln – equality, dignity, and opportunity for all. There is no greater cause on earth than to preserve what truly makes America great. I am ready to lead that fight."

Weld faces near-impossible odds in his quest to defeat Trump in the Republican primary.

Axios
Trump's GOP challenger Weld: I'm the most pro-choice 2020 candidate

Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld (R) told a crowd in Exeter, New Hampshire, he’s "the most pro-choice person you’re ever going to meet," AP reports.

Driving the news: Many 2020 hopefuls have come out swinging in opposition of Missouri and Alabama's strict new abortion laws, describing the bills as "dangerous and exceptionally cruel, per Axios' Rashaan Ayesh.

What he's saying: President Trump’s only major GOP primary challenger said he was unsure whether he'd have a litmus test that a possible Supreme Court justice would have to vote to keep Roe v. Wade but his standard would be "pretty close," according to AP.

ABC News
GOP challenger Bill Weld turns up heat on Trump: 'Seems he would prefer an Aryan nation'

President Donald Trump's lone Republican primary challenger, former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, ratcheted up his attacks on the president Tuesday night.

Speaking at the first in a series of Kennedy Institute events focused on the 2020 election cycle, Weld levied a number of his harshest verbal jabs yet, saying earlier this week that the president preferred an "Aryan nation."

"I celebrate that America has always been a melting pot," Weld said at the speaking event on Tuesday. "It seems he would prefer an Aryan nation."

According to the Anti-Defamation League, "Aryan Nations is a longstanding neo-Nazi group in the United States that dates back to the 1970s."

When asked to explain what specifically he meant by "Aryan nation," Weld told ABC News that he believes the president "would prefer a nation with no immigrants."

WaPo - David Montgomery
Is Bill Weld the hero Never Trumpers have been waiting for?

Bill Weld looks comfortable standing with his back to the mantelpiece of an antique-laden living room in a neighborhood inhabited by Washington’s deposed ruling class — perhaps too comfortable. As of this rainy Tuesday evening in late June, the fiscally conservative, socially liberal 74-year-old former governor of Massachusetts is the only Republican who has dared to mount a primary challenge against President Trump. The purpose of tonight’s invitation-only reception is to introduce his candidacy to about 175 members of the capital’s bipartisan upper crust.

The host committee and guests include a couple of Ronald Reagan’s White House social secretaries; George H.W. Bush-appointed former Federal Election Commission chairman Trevor Potter; Jimmy Carter’s White House communications director, Gerald Rafshoon; conservative commentator and arch Never Trumper Bill Kristol; and 2016 independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin. Coordinated by eminent Washington event planner Carolyn Peachey, the evening has all the makings of a planning session for the posh wing of the Resistance.

“Tonight I do pose this question,” Weld says. “Is it really too much to ask that senior members of the government in Washington observe those same rules that we teach our children? Apparently yes. More’s the pity.”

More’s the pity, perhaps, that Weld is not a take-the-ramparts kind of orator. To these potential troops perched on upholstered love seats, he serves barbs whittled and polished like intricate cherrywood clawfeet. “I do think it’s not a stretch to say that, at some level, Mr. Trump is a sick man,” Weld says. “And I don’t mean physically, I mean in his head. There’s lots of furies there. I wouldn’t want his demons. You know, I think that, like all bullies — and it’s clear beyond peradventure that he’s a bully — he is insecure. … Which is why anytime someone poses a slightest threat to him, he brands them a loser or an abject loser. The poor mayor of London has been called a loser so many times because he’s standing in Mr. Trump’s way of achieving in an untrammeled fashion what he wants — namely, everybody agreeing with him and telling him how fantastic he is.”

Honestly, Captain Comatose would be better than "Tweeting Thumbs faster than a speeding bullet."

You guys want exciting and when you get it you complain. Jeez.

"Pip Pip! I say old boy, this Trump rascal is a bounder and a cad!"

I wholly approve of Weld running against Trump, but he's practically the poster child for a certain kind of centrist/center-right Never Trump/#Resistance sort. Reminds me of an old Gabriella Paiella joke that went something like "When my dog licks his balls I like to talk to him like liberals replying to Trump tweets—"Sir! Sir! Have you no shame! Must you do this in public?!"
