I've met my fellow Wisconsinite Bradley Whitford. He comes back to WI for a lot of Democratic political events, and is generally awesome.

Gwyneth Paltrow, on the other hand, is a science-denying snake oil saleswoman/crank, and I wish Buttigieg would decline her support.

‘Not something to be flaunted, praised or politicized’: Franklin Graham blasts Buttigieg for being gay

By Kyle Swenson April 25 at 5:05 AM

In his effort to push through the crowded room of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates, Pete Buttigieg, the gay mayor of South Bend, Ind., has regularly brought up his Christian faith and his experience balancing scripture with his sexuality.

“It can be challenging to be a person of faith who’s also part of the LGBTQ community and yet, to me, the core of faith is regard for one another,” the candidate said at a CNN town hall on Monday. “And part of God’s love is experienced, according to my faith tradition, is in the way that we support one another and, in particular, support the least among us.”

By embracing and reconciling two identities that have often been pitted against one another in modern American discourse, Buttigieg has put himself on a collision course with Christian evangelicals, the deeply conservative GOP backbone that has pushed back against LGBTQ rights.

On Wednesday, one of President Trump’s most vocal evangelical supporters, Franklin Graham, the son of the prominent evangelist Billy Graham, set off that showdown with a series of tweets attacking the South Bend mayor on the grounds of faith.

‘Shut up — you are a disgrace!’ Morning Joe goes nuclear on Franklin Graham’s attack on Pete Buttigieg
Brad Reed
25 APR 2019 AT 07:02 ET

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough on Thursday launched a brutal broadside against the Rev. Franklin Graham for his attack on Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s sexuality.

After reading Graham’s statement imploring Buttigieg to “repent” for being gay, Scarborough got extremely angry and told Graham to keep quiet about others’ sexuality when he has spend the past three years cheering on serial adulterer Donald Trump.

“Just shut up!” he said. “You are a disgrace! You are a disgrace for normalizing Donald Trump’s behavior!”

Good points, this is an opinion piece and was originally in Salon, then Raw Story so I'll include it all, I think the points are very well made.
Pete Buttigieg’s candidacy exposes the hypocrisy of the Christian right
Amanda Marcotte, Salon AMANDA MARCOTTE, SALON - COMMENTARY
25 APR 2019 AT 16:48 ET

South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg has drawn criticism for running for president in a crowded field of Democrats that includes many women and candidates of color who have a great deal more political experience than he does. But there’s one reason Democratic voters should be glad he’s in the primary race, even if they don’t plan on voting for him: Every day Buttigieg remains in the national spotlight he exposes the hypocrisy of white evangelicals. In doing so, he’s helping to diminish their still-formidable political power.

This article first appeared in Salon.

While the image some may have of white evangelicals is along the lines of illiterate snake-handlers, anyone who has spent time in the community will immediately recognize that Buttigieg is, in nearly every way, their ideal man. He’s intelligent and educated, but in a way that reads as traditional and conscientious, instead of challenging or cosmopolitan — he seems like he was more interested in Graham Greene than Michel Foucault in college. He’s artistic, but not in an edgy way, with musical skills more appropriate for a chapel pianist than a rock band. He’s worked as a naval officer and is a devoted church-goer. He’s married to a beloved junior high teacher who tweets about their dogs.

Buttigieg is what most white evangelical couples dream of in a son — except, of course, that he’s gay and married to a man. And because of this, Buttigieg is able, both in his rhetoric and identity, to expose on a daily basis how the evangelical talk about “family values” is simply cover for their misogyny and homophobia, and how evangelical “sexual morality” is just a weapon to terrorize anyone who isn’t a straight man.

The contrast between the thoughtful and devoted Buttigieg and Donald Trump, whom most white evangelicals voted for, is comically vast. Trump seems to have used fraud to evade military service. He’s half-literate and his attempts at faking Christian beliefs are insultingly lazy. And he’s a compulsive adulterer who has blown up two marriages and cheated on his current wife with a nude model and a porn actress.

Despite his Boy Scout demeanor, Buttigieg isn’t afraid to contrast his wholesome life with Trump’s truly awe-inspiring levels of sleaze. He’s specifically singled out Vice President Mike Pence, who built his career using religion to shame women and sexual minorities for daring to have a sex life, for being “the cheerleader of the porn star presidency.”

Pence has responded by ignoring his lengthy history of attacks on LGBTQ rights and instead pretending that Buttigieg is attacking him for a privately held belief. But others in the religious right aren’t quite ready to fake tolerance for the cameras while working to destroy LGBTQ rights in the shadows.

Evangelical leader and Trump supporter Franklin Graham, for instance, took to Twitter to lambast Buttigieg for his marriage, telling him that homosexuality is something he should be ashamed of, “not something to be flaunted, praised or politicized.”

Other conservative pundits and leaders have snatched the bait, attacking Buttigieg as a pervert for his almost comically wholesome marriage, while excusing Trump, a man who literally cruised the Playboy Mansion in searching out women to cheat on his third wife with.

Pundit Erick Erickson denies that Buttigieg is a Christian, equating “Christian” with holding right wing political views and suggesting that Buttigieg thinks “bestiality is okay.”

Pastor and GOP politician E.W. Jackson declared that a “normal man is disgusted by the idea of two men kissing” and that Buttigieg is part of a “gay mafia” trying to impose “homocracy” on the country.

Christian right leader Peter LaBarbera declared that Buttigieg “brazenly and openly defies God” and whined that anyone “would be labeled a bigot and a homophobe” for saying such a bigoted and homophobic thing.

White evangelicals can deny they’re bigots until they’re blue in the face, but there is literally no other way to understand how they are unbothered by Trump’s chronic adulteries and affiliation with the porn industry, while lambasting someone like Buttigieg for being in a tame, monogamous marriage. And this blatant hypocrisy is helping many people, especially young people, see the Christian right as the hate movement that it is.

A study released by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) in 2017 found that there’s been a drastic decline in the number of Americans who identify as Christian, and it’s driven largely by young white people abandoning the evangelical churches. One of the main reasons for this exodus is objections to homophobia and the hypocrisy of evangelical leaders.

And young people who do stay within the evangelical community — a majority of whom support same-sex marriage — are starting to speak out about this hypocrisy and bigotry.

Salon reporter Rachel Leah wrote about a compelling example when Indiana evangelical Christian college Taylor University invited Pence to be their commencement speaker this May. In interviews with students, faculty and alumni, Leah found widespread outrage, much of it rooted in fury over Pence’s homobigotry. An online petition condemning Pence for rejecting “the Christian ethic of love we hold dear” now has more signatures than there are students in the school.

Buttigieg has garnered some criticism for being what film director John Waters cheekily calls “straight gay people“. As Slate writer Christina Cauterucci pointed out, “a gay candidate without such sturdy ties to straight culture” — someone who wasn’t “white, male, upper-class, Midwestern, married, Ivy League-educated, and a man of faith” — would probably not find it so easy to be taken seriously as a presidential candidate.

But it’s Buttigieg’s basicness that makes him absolute kryptonite for the religious right. No amount of screaming about his supposed defiance of God can change the fact that he reads like a nice young Christian man who is kind of boring, and that puts him in direct contrast with the shameless, lying adulterer in the White House.

So Democrats should be glad for Buttigieg’s entrance into the race, even if they don’t plan on voting for him in the primary. The religious right has, by dint of being well-organized, outsized power in U.S. electoral politics. But the more they’re exposed as hypocrites, the more followers they lose, and the harder it is for them to gain and leverage influence. And every day they’re flipping out about Buttigieg while they continue to protect Trump, their demobilization is hastened.

Hi,

Moving forward, Pete for America will not accept any money from lobbyists and we are returning all donations from registered lobbyists who have contributed to date -- that's $30,250 from 39 individuals.

Mayor Pete will not be influenced by special-interest money, and we understand that making this promise is an important part of that commitment.

We understand that making this decision and being vocal about our values is important; that the decision means more than just whether or not we are willing to accept money from a specific individual.

Standing up for our collective values not only includes saying we believe that campaigns should not take money from lobbyists; it also means being aware of the loopholes that still allow special interests to impact the campaign.

This campaign will:

Not accept money directly from individuals who are registered as federal lobbyists

Not allow registered lobbyists to serve as bundlers for our campaign, because that would still allow them to use their influence to benefit our campaign

Add new language to our contribution forms about our standards around lobbying and donating

Implement internal procedures and audits to ensure we are living by these commitments

Not accept money from corporate PACs

Not accept money from the fossil fuel industry

You've held us to a higher standard, and we're grateful for your partnership. We're going to need your continued support.

We've launched a grassroots fundraising team -- a group of supporters who is organizing around campaign finance goals. Already, that team of supporters has raised close to a half million dollars from their personal networks.

If you're interested in joining that team, please sign up here:

Thanks for your support, your commitment to our better future, and for holding us to a higher standard.

I’ve been like that about Sanders since day 1. I don’t dare say that aloud. Too many friends who worship him. Almost literally.

I hope Mayor Pete can keep what ego he may have in check.
We voted for Bernie in the primary in 2016 but we were so disappointed in the way he handled his loss, I'll be damned if I'll support him in the primary again. BUT, if he somehow gets the nomination, I'll hold my nose and vote for him.

I'm incredibly impressed with Buttagieg. That said, I still think he needs more experience, maybe run for congress or the senate first. He's young, he's got plenty of time to run for POTUS. But if he gets the nod, I'll vote for him proudly.

The Hill
Buttigieg plans meeting with Al Sharpton

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) is set to meet with Rev. Al Sharpton on Monday as Democratic presidential hopefuls continue to engage the civil rights activist.

Buttigieg and Sharpton are slated to meet at Sylvia's, a soul food restaurant in Harlem, N.Y., where Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) dined with Sharpton earlier this year.

The meeting comes as Buttigieg, who has been surging in polling in recent months, steps up his outreach to African American voters.

The mayor and several other 2020 presidential hopefuls, including Harris, Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), spoke at an event for Sharpton's group, the National Action Network, earlier this month.

Daily Beast
Far-Right Smear Merchants Try to Slime Pete Buttigieg with Bogus Sex Assault Claim

The mayor was briefly accused of assaulting a young man. A GOP source says right-wing operatives Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman approached him to make similarly untrue accusations.

A pair of right-wing provocateurs are being accused of attempting to recruit young Republican men to level false allegations of sexual assault against Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg.

The details of the operatives’ attempt emerged as one man suddenly surfaced with a vague and uncorroborated allegation that Buttigieg had assaulted him. The claim was retracted hours later on a Facebook page appearing to belong to the man.

A Republican source told The Daily Beast that lobbyist Jack Burkman and internet troll Jacob Wohl approached him last week to try to convince him to falsely accuse Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, of engaging him sexually while he was too drunk to consent.

The source who spoke to The Daily Beast said Burkman and Wohl made clear that their goal was to kneecap Buttigieg’s momentum in the 2020 presidential race. The man asked to remain anonymous out of a concern that the resulting publicity might imperil his employment, and because he said Wohl and Burkman have a reputation for vindictiveness.

Regarding Wohl: Why why why is any reporter giving anything this guy does a single line of print? He's been revealed as a serial liar and fabulist. He has the high distinction (???) of being the youngest person ever to get banned for life by the SEC. He's in it for the attention. And he's getting it.

It's infuriating.

There's a pattern here, going back decades, of the Right Wing Smear Machine ginning up fake scandals to attack the opposition with. It didn't start with Wohl. Hillary was right when she called it a "vast right-wing conspiracy". That's what the media should be zeroing in on, not just the individuals fronting for each new smear attempt.

New Yorker - Charles Bethea
Deep Cuts from Pete Buttigieg’s Rhodie Résumé

At Oxford, the Presidential candidate kept a library of exotic whiskeys and studied everywhere, from a freighter to the shared rest room.

In 1988, Spy magazine published a piece by Andrew Sullivan titled “All Rhodes Lead Nowhere in Particular.” In it, Sullivan made fun of the “bland eugenic perfection” of the typical Rhodes scholar. He was riffing on the old platitude “A Rhodes scholar is someone with a great future behind him.” Except—maybe?—for Pete Buttigieg, the ascendant Presidential candidate and millennial mayor of South Bend, Indiana.

Before heading to England, in 2005, Buttigieg joined the thirty-odd American Rhodes Scholars in Washington, D.C., at an orientation called Sailing Weekend, which involved no sailing. The twenty-three-year-old Harvard grad introduced himself as Peter and carried a small notebook in his pocket. So had Bill Clinton—the only Rhodes Scholar to have become President—who is said to have taken notes about everyone he met. (Bobby Jindal and Cory Booker, who is also running for President, were Rhodes Scholars, too.)

Buttigieg immediately stood out among the standouts. Katharine Wilkinson, an author and an environmentalist, remembered a debate Buttigieg participated in, on the subject of “democratic policy, or the future of the Democratic Party, or something.” She said, “I thought, Holy shit, I’m out of my depth. This guy’s, like, really freaking impressive.”

Marissa Doran, a lawyer in New York, said Buttigieg was “a good egg” who, when he wasn’t leading a politics-themed discussion group, liked to “hole up and play Risk or Settlers of Catan.” At Pembroke, one of Oxford’s residential colleges, Buttigieg oversaw the common-room bar. “He curated this great collection of whiskey from around the world,” Wilkinson said. “When students took trips, he’d get them to bring something back for his ‘whiskey library.’ ”
