Bingo!
If the city is going to host, it should demand a hefty deposit (100% of estimated cost) payable at least 2 months before the convention. Hotels should also demand advance payment, including the added costs of pandemic protection.

Wherever the Republican Convention is held, I'd very much like to see the contagion stats on delegates and locals for the month following the convention.

By the way, does anyone have news on the Democratic Convention? Is it going to be one big Zoom?

I've heard the DNC basically saying that the conviention will be going ahead as planned. I'm sure that unofficially they are looking at all options.

I have zero interest in moving the Republican National Convention to Doral in Miami, as falsely reported by the Fake News
@nytimes in order to stir up trouble. Ballroom is not nearly big enough & would like to stay in N.C., whose gov. doesn’t even know if he can let people in?
April@speakout_april

Don’t fall for it. RNC already discussing downscaling the "Republican National Convention". Trump’s just setting the stage to blame NC. As @maggieNYT reports Trump has expressed interest at having the convention at a Doral ballroom. Not quite “full capacity” is it? #ScamArtist

Newsweek: Trump Says Republican National Convention Might Move From Charlotte—No Other City Wanted to Host It ...

Demanding an answer on whether Republicans would be able to move forward with a fully-attended convention in August, Trump said that if North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, could not commit to the allowance, the RNC would be reluctantly forced to move the convention and "all of the jobs and economic development it brings" to another state.

While the coronavirus pandemic could make it difficult for Trump to find another state willing to hold the mass event, another clear hurdle stands in the president's way: the fact that few states wanted to host the event in the first place.

An article published by New York Magazine's Intelligencer blog laid out the GOP's struggle with the headline: "GOP Awards Its 2020 Convention to the Only City That Sorta Kinda Wanted It."

At the time, Charlotte, which had previously hosted the 2012 Democratic National Convention, had been the only city to publicly pursue the convention, while other cities, including Philadelphia, San Antonio and Nashville, backed away from the potential bid. ...

Gov. Cooper's office has responded to the threat, with a spokesperson asserting that the state would continue to work with Republicans on planning the event, but would also rely on "data and science to protect our state's public health and safety."

It turns out very few cities are hoping to host the RNC. Especially during a contagion, especially on short notice, especially because there is no competition for the nomination (that boosts the number of attendees and hangers-on, and the local advertising for candidates).

I'll bet I'm not the only person who wants to know the infection stats for delegates no matter where the convention is held.

Packing 20,000 people into an arena for the RNC is a bad idea. Trump wants it to happen anyway.
Trump’s push for a normal Republican Party gathering is the latest indication he doesn’t get how the coronavirus works.

https://www.vox.com/2020/5/26/21270362/ ... oronavirus
The idea of 20,000 people traveling from all parts of the United States to pack themselves into an arena amid an outbreak of a highly communicable, deadly disease that spreads especially efficiently indoors might sound ill-advised to most of us. But most of us are not President Donald Trump.

:snippity:

Cooper has good reason to be cautious. For one, his state’s coronavirus outbreak is not yet under control — in fact, it isn’t even clearly trending in the right direction.

According to data compiled by the New York Times, the 1,070 new cases reported in the state on Saturday constituted a single-day high. Some of that is due to increased testing, but the state’s recent single-day positivity rate of 9 percent is still significantly above the 5 percent number the World Health Organization has identified as the minimum standard for reopening. (According to the Raleigh News & Observer, 6.9 percent of all tests completed in the state so far have been positive.)

:snippity:

Studies have shown that the virus spreads especially easily indoors, so packing 20,000 cheering people into an arena where they will likely be spraying respiratory droplets (believed to be one of the chief vehicles for Covid-19 spread) into the air could easily become a vector for the disease. This is why no major sports leagues in the United States plan to have games with fans in attendance this summer. Not only that, but since people travel from all over the country for the RNC, it could end up igniting outbreaks elsewhere.

Texas In Running To Host RNC Convention If Moved Out Of North Carolina, Vice President Says

https://dfw.cbslocal.com/2020/05/25/tex ... president/
After President Trump threatened to move the Republican National Convention out of North Carolina, Texas GOP Chairman James Dickey said Monday, “Texas would welcome President Trump and the RNC Convention.”

:snippity:

During an interview later in the morning on Fox News Channel, Vice President Mike Pence mentioned Texas, Georgia and Florida as states the convention could be moved to instead.

“We look forward to working with Governor Cooper, getting a swift response and, if need be, if need be, moving the national convention to a state that is farther along on reopening and can say with confidence that we can gather there,” Vice President Pence said.

:snippity:

Public health officials, including some in North Texas, have warned large gatherings indoors for prolonged periods of time could cause the Covid-19 virus to spread.

Trump desperately misses his rallies. He misses the cheering, the obvious adulation. He wants the stands filled with people yelling his name, yelling "Lock him up," booing the Democrats.

I don't know how many rallies Trump will have before that 2020 Convention, but the Convention will take place no matter what. Trump wants to make sure that it is real, not virtual, and filled to the rafters, as crowded as possible. He couldn't care less about his supporters getting sick. It's a risk they should all be willing to take for the sake of his re-election.

And Trump has a point. His ardent supporters will willingly crowd the convention center.

So all that is necessary for this to happen is for them to have a location with a governor willing to put party over science, Trump's interests over the health of the people of that state. Unfortunately, there are a plethora of governors willing to do Trump's bidding.

Aren't there some kind of contractual agreements in place with North Carolina? I know that doesn't matter to twitler, but it must matter to the RNC.

They should move the convention to San Francisco. We can accommodate them on Alcatraz Island for both the convention and their lodgings, then conveniently forget to send pick-up boats when it's over.

Let's think outside the box, what about Wuhan China for the GOP convention? since we all know that it is only a seasonal flu.

BFF Xi will really want to do a favour to Teh Donald, lately impotus was tweeting so many bad words and hammered the WHO. Needs surely some compromise, and Wuhan has nearly no covid critters left in the wild. And as an attraction for the GOP staff while their bosses are hunching together, a trip to a major tourist attraction, the wet meat markets
