GOP has few takers for 2020 convention

Cities across the country are turning down the opportunity to host the 2020 Republican National Convention, where President Trump is expected to be nominated for a second term.

The cities that have rejected hosting duties insist Trump and today’s divisive politics are not factors in their decisions. They instead cite high security costs and disruptions in the normal flow of business and traffic. ...

Only three cities are even in the running to host the GOP in 2020 — and only one, Charlotte, N.C., is public and open about its interest. ...

Representatives from the Nevada GOP pitched the Republican National Committee’s site selection committee last week on Las Vegas, but city officials aren’t on board. A spokesman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said the city had declined to submit a bid. The authority was not aware of another bid submitted on Las Vegas’s behalf.

San Antonio, which had been interested in the process, has pulled out. ...

Nashville and Philadelphia, two other cities that were once part of the process, also pulled out.

The above the fold headline in today's Houston Chronicle. :-D

Houston ‘seriously considering’ bid for 2020 Democratic National Convention

https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texa ... 905420.php
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said Thursday that the city is “seriously considering” a bid for the Democratic National Convention in 2020, joining seven other cities that have taken initial steps to host the event.

Democratic National Committee officials confirmed that Houston is one of eight cities that were sent formal proposal requests after responding to initial inquiries to gauge their interest.

:snippity:

Other cities that have expressed interest in the Democratic convention are Atlanta, Birmingham, Denver, Miami Beach, Milwaukee, New York City and San Francisco.

Politico
Trump campaign moves to stave off mayhem at 2020 convention

President Donald Trump is tightening his iron grip on the Republican Party, launching an elaborate effort to stamp out any vestiges of GOP opposition that might embarrass him at the 2020 Republican convention.

The president’s reelection campaign is intent on avoiding the kind of circus that unfolded on the convention floor in 2016, when Never Trump Republicans loudly protested his nomination before a national TV audience ... it’s meant to ensure that delegates at next year’s convention in Charlotte, N.C., are presidential loyalists.

As the presidential campaign season kicks off, Trump’s Republican detractors concede that derailing his renomination is exceedingly unlikely. Polls consistently show his approval rating exceeds 80 percent among Republican voters.

Yet GOP resistance to Trump has simmered in recent weeks, with senior party figures sounding off about the resignation of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and the president’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria.

As they begin preparing for Charlotte, Trump aides are studying past conventions that became sidetracked by rival forces.

Talking Points Memo
City Council Of Charlotte, Host Of 2020 GOP Convention, Votes To Condemn Trump

The Charlotte City Council voted Monday to condemn President Donald Trump’s “racist and xenophobic comments” about the squad, a notable move from the leadership of the city that will play host to the 2020 Republican convention.

The vote was split along party lines, according to the Washington Post.

A Charlotte Observer reporter snapped a picture of the resolution:

— Anna Douglas (@ADouglasNews) July 22, 2019
The document “acknowledges that many of the City’s residents are immigrants and/or people of color” and “condemns all hate speech, bigotry, racism, and discrimination, wherever it may occur, especially from the highest levels of government.”
Adding:
HuffPo: Charlotte Is Starting To Regret Hosting Trump’s Renomination Convention

President Donald Trump’s racist and xenophobic statements have drawn official condemnation from a city that is now predominantly black and Latino.

Quite a record so far. He announced his 2020 candidacy in Orlando and that city’s paper wrote a scathing editorial. Now the Charlotte paper does the same before it hosts the convention.

Politico: Trump threatens to pull Republican convention out of North Carolina

He demands a guarantee the convention will be allowed to go on as planned.

President Donald Trump on Monday morning threatened to move August’s Republican National Convention out of North Carolina unless there are guarantees the state will let everyone attend.

“I love the Great State of North Carolina, so much so that I insisted on having the Republican National Convention in Charlotte at the end of August. Unfortunately, Democrat Governor, @RoyCooperNC is still in Shutdown mood & unable to guarantee that by August we will be allowed ... ..full attendance in the Arena,” he began in a string of four tweets.

Trump added: “In other words, we would be spending millions of dollars building the Arena to a very high standard without even knowing if the Democrat Governor would allow the Republican Party to fully occupy the space.”

In case voters in the swing state might take offense, Trump twice indicated his “love” for the state and its people. Recent polls have shown Trump and presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden in a tight battle for North Carolina’s 15 electoral votes.

The RNC is scheduled to be held in Charlotte on Aug. 24-27, less than a week after Democrats are set to wrap up their rescheduled convention in Milwaukee. It’s not clear where the Republican convention might be moved or how easily that could be done on relatively short notice.

The Governor should make a statement immediately that no matter the restrictions in place elsewhere in the state a special dispensation will be granted to the RNC to huddle together to their hearts content. They could even save the RNC some money by constructing huge circus tents for lodging since the hotels and restaurants would not be exempt.

Given how bad the Trump campaign has been about paying its bills, NC should be happy to see them hold their convention elsewhere.

North Carolina has a history of hurricanes hitting in August. The RNC should consider relocating to a reliably red state well away from the coast. Perhaps Wyoming or one of the Dakotas?

He's trying to force a "Democrat governor" to reopen the State of North Carolina more quickly than the governor might like by using the threat of moving the RNC elsewhere. Also, Trump is desperate to be cheered by a large crowd which can't happen in this age of social distancing.
