Re: Derek Chauvin trial: The murder of George Floyd
So, here we are two weeks into the trial. Do the lawyers have jury observers on their team to see how the jury is reacting to direct and cross? Do the lawyers keep a scorecard on each witness after direct and cross and award a score to see just how well the trial is going (or not going) for their s...

Re: Derek Chauvin trial: The murder of George Floyd
I never get too optimistic about any trial until the verdict is in. I know that there is great emotional investment in this case, but caution that anything can happen with a jury. O'rly? OJ! I was in grad school when the OJ trial was underway. On the day of the verdict, I was on the bus going to ca...

Re: Matthew "Matt" Louis Gaetz II R-FL1 "Soulless, Power-Hungry Ghoul" "Petulant Idiot" & His Helper, Nestor Galban
I am reminded by this interesting thread that I don't seem to have the same definition of "successful" as many/most other people. I grudgingly accept usages such as "successful murderer" as at least clear, but balk at (to use an extreme but illustrative example) usages such as &...

Re: Assault on the Capitol (DC)
imho, given the 800+ persons who breached the building... they all should be held to account, even if they did nothing more than enter. They are accomplices to the crimes. They helped create a mob that encouraged the actual violent perps. I don’t disagree. They just won’t be punished as harshly.

Re: Assault on the Capitol (DC)
I predict very few actual trials. The harshest punishments will go to those who put their hands on law enforcement officers (even if they’re not charged with assault), those who conspired before actually arriving in DC, and those who entered the chambers and congressional offices. Let me add those w...

Re: Derek Chauvin trial: The murder of George Floyd
Today's testimony was beyond devastating for Chauvin. All 3 experts did a great job firmly debunking the drug overdose and/or heart disease bullshit. Basically the defense 2 defenses left; the crowd and "George Floyd deserved it". I'm guessing the I-was-scared-of-the-crowd excuse will be ...

Re: Derek Chauvin trial: The murder of George Floyd
I would be interested in knowing if others (hi, Stern! ) would agree with me that Dr Tobin stood up quite firmly under cross examination and pretty well closed the door on the idea that Floyd could have died from a fentanyl overdose, heart condition, etc. He was an exceptional witness, in my...

I wish I could say I’m shocked, but I’m not. I’ve lost count of the number of clients I’ve represented who were charged with child pornography offenses. I once attended a CLE in the military where the keynote speaker was an federal prosecutor. He asked, by show of hands, how many of the 450 or so p...

Matt Gaetz will win his next election as long as he is not actually incarcerated Nothing about being in prison will prevent him from running, James Traficant ran for his seat as a 3rd party. Seeing how insane the GQP has become, I can see this scumbag running as an R, winning, and serving his term ...

Re: Derek Chauvin trial: The murder of George Floyd
Is it just me, or is the defense making things worse for Chauvin? (Almost all are not actual quotes.) *"Chauvin's knee is on Floyd's lower neck, not upper neck." Witness: maybe. Next witness: no, Chauvin's knee is on the back of Floyd's neck. *"Saying I can't breathe is a form if res...

Re: Derek Chauvin trial: The murder of George Floyd
Also: News reporting today indicated that one witness who was in the car with Floyd was going to invoke his Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination in response to certain potential questions on cross, likely having to do with drug use. The defense is desperate to put forward the theory...

The church hat was also featured in season 3 of The Wire (HBO) when some of Avon Barksdale’s crew violated the “Sunday Truce” and tried to take out Omar Little as he was taking his elderly grandmother to church. Her hat fell off while Omar was pushing her into a taxi, and the taxi ran over it. Avon ...

Nor in Sacramento. Mantillas were big in my mom’s circle though. You would find lots of lacy black head coverings, few hats. I went to catholic school. We wore “chapel veils.” Little girls wore small white round ones (except for First Communion -then you got fancy). Grown women wore either a long w...
