Re: Hijack this thread

Well, Mercola claims msg causes a gazillion horrible medical problems. Ignoring him, always a good idea, I haven't found any research that supports the idea that msg is unhealthy. The only potential negative regards people with high salt intake and dysfunctional kidneys. If trying to avoid msg, an a...

Re: 1/18/20 Flash Poll -- Who Are Your Top 5 Democratic Candidate Choices For President?

I can't figure out who to pick. I see Klobuchar's good points, but she helped Trump pack the courts. Not sure if that is forgivable. Correction - that is not forgivable. Warren will need a strong VP pick. I had a passing thought that Biden could be a one term VP to help smooth the way for Warren. Du...

The NYT Editorial Board statement surprised me. NYT has frequently disappointed (to put it mildly), but that statement seems ... reasonable. I have a couple of quibbles, but all in all, it's thoughtful and reasonable.

Re: Hijack this thread

Remember Chinese restaurant syndrome? I still see some foods labelled "No MSG." MSG in Chinese food isn't unhealthy -- you're just racist, activists say https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/18/asia/chinese-restaurant-syndrome-msg-intl-hnk-scli/index.html It turns out that one paper claimed that msg caused "C...

Re: Recipes!

In an unrelated thread, for a short time the big question was Potatoes - Healthy or Deadly? I followed a link that brought me to "healthy" potato-leek chowder. It's low fat and sodium. Looked yummy, tho, and I was hungry. https://www.health.com/health/recipe/0,,10000001097038,00.html So I made it an...

The killer shot his landlady (apparently alive in critical condition) and set fire to the neighborhood. 12 homes were damaged, at least 5 of them are a total loss. The killer's body is believed to be in one of the destroyed homes. https://www.staradvertiser.com/2020/01/19/breaking-news/2-honolulu-po...

Re: What are you watching on TV these days?

I mostly watch CNN and MSNBC to an unhealthy degree. So when I tear myself away, I watch Masterpiece on PBS and totally junk tv, like Project Runway which has returned to Bravo. And various train wrecks on TLC when I vacuum or wash dishes. No matter how low I feel I feel, I cheer up because I'm bett...

Found this on LGF. I love ASL. It's kinetic. It's emotional. It's full body communication. (I also suck at it. It's top of my list of "things to learn when I retire.")

Aussie Firefighters Save World's Only Groves Of Prehistoric Wollemi Pines It was a lifesaving mission as dramatic as any in the months-long battle against the wildfires that have torn through the Australian bush. But instead of a race to save humans or animals, a specialized team of Australian fire...

Re: Bernie Sanders 2020

I'm grateful for this discussion. TBH I haven't recovered from the nastiness I experienced when Sanders was done, and I said we had to pivot to Hillary to prevent Trump from being elected. Basically, I was told that we had to suffer Trump b/c it's Killary's fault and she'd be worse. And I was a Hill...

Re: Child Molester's Wife Sues Church for Reporting Him

I won a case against jehovah witnesses in Hawaii about child abuse a gazillion years ago. In particular, the female child was being groomed to appease the elders. It's a horrible thing to see a 9 yo tarted out in a miniskirt and tube top with high heels.

Got her to her mom who had fled the church.

I hated being forced to drink glasses of milk every day when I was little. Finally, after I repeated vomited at school and home, I was allowed to only drink half a glass. (The 50's sucked.) But during the summer I was on the old family farm where I "helped" to milk the cow and churn butter. The tast...

Re: Retail Bankruptcies

We have only one mall here, and it's small. In 2018, the vacancy rate was about 40%. The two remaining anchors were Kmart & Macy's. Then Kmart closed. More recently Pier I. It closed really fast - an ad appeared that it was closing with 30% off. (Given its prices, that wasn't much.) And then in 2 we...

Thank you! I'll feel a lot better the next time he visits! The last time he hiked in, he got out just before the weather turned significantly. He was supposed to spend a few more days, but wisely left and was able to reach an area where he could call me. The canyon is gorgeous. It's wonderful to hik...

Re: Plane Crash - Jet Crash

Thanks for the update and local input. The crash made the national news at first, then fizzled out. Well, we're a small community. If we don't know the pilot, we know his friends. So it hit all of us hard because we all knew when the flight was late there was a disaster. And late last night we lear...

Fires were always scary in Australia. I was trapped in Brisbane for a day because of a fire raging along the only route to my home in Northern New South Wales. There were a couple of times I was on full alert when a fire came within a couple of miles from my home. They move very fast. I've been watc...

Re: Plane Crash - Jet Crash

There's always been a lot anger about the helicopters here. Especially for those in the flight paths. There is a deep suspicion that the helicopter companies take needless risks. Our Congresscritter Ed Case is demanding changes - which isn't new for him. His big issue is that the pilot needs to pilo...
