Re: Hijack this thread

Our hotel in Ho Chi Minh City was a thing of beauty, with marble floors and intricately carved wooden walls and cupboards. I was sorry to see there was no plug for the bath, but resigned to living with showers. (We don't have a tub at home, as we are on tank water, so a tub is an extravagant waste o...

Um, we did that once. Definitely by accident. We'd been in KL and then flew off somewhere and then had one more night in KL before flying out, which we hadn't booked before-hand. When we went to book it we discovered our normal hotel was sold out, and we found a place nearby that had okay reviews a...

Re: Bundy related gossip and discussion

My husband grew up on a dairy farm; I have lots of friends who are sheep farmers; and yes, everyone who uses hay knows it can spontaneously combust. And yes, there are ways to prevent it; and you'd think someone whose family had been farming for 15,000,000 years would know how to prepare and stack h...

Baker City's kind of pretty. If you want to really call yourself an Eastern Oregonian, go move to one of the ugly places, like Umatilla. (I'm weirdly happy to see that cowboy still standing. I remember him! When I was a kid he was outside the grocery store that gave green stamps.) umatilla.jpg Bake...

Huh. Isn't it interesting that the anti-government Bundys called on the tax-funded fire brigade to put this out? So self-sufficiency is all well and good until, suddenly, it isn't. I'd think the sort of man who would rather see his kids go hungry than rely on the government-funded lunch program woul...

Re: Veterans on Patrol #OperationBackyardBrawl

We usually throw a Halloween party which always includes trick or treating, but since it's not a custom here, I ask the neighbours a week before and drop off candy for anyone who wants trick or treaters (with plenty of extras as a thank you.) My neighbours are awesome. One is a Jehovah's Witness but...

Re: Headed off for the hospital

Chemo and radiology caused major breathing problems for my MIL. Radiology kind of makes sense (she had breast cancer and it's hard to target the breast without also hitting the lungs) but her oncologist kept saying the chemo shouldn't affect her breathing - but it did. In her case it's taken about t...

We're off to New Caledonia in two days. I would say I'll be thinking of you, but let's face it, I won't. All I can think of now are those white sandy beaches and the beautiful little city that is Nouméa.

In this one case, the lack of a motive seemed to be a statement about the lack of motivation for racist hatred; the show seemed to portray it as a disease that exists without reason. Extending its own existence was its only purpose. A warning that we must be eternally vigilant. At least, that's wha...

I'm not going to make light of the blessing because I've had a couple in my own life and I believe they helped. But it's frustrating that the message here isn't, "Let's not do stupid things," but rather, "Hey look, God protects us when we do stupid things." I believe in a God of miracles, but I also...

I also kept thinking how much my mother would've hated it. That's her main gripe with Doctor Who, that it removes these central figures from history and makes their motivation some mysterious space alien, like they wouldn't have had the courage or the intelligence to act without some intergalactic h...

Re: Tonight's Doctor Who episode.

I loved that Rosa Parks looked at Ryan at the end. I thought they'd have her look at the Doctor, since the Doctor is always the hero. But by having her look at Ryan instead, she was saying, I know what I'm doing and I'm doing this for you. Portia - I'm just always curious about motivations. He didn'...

It would appear I'm wrong about the Southern Baptists taking this action recently; the only transgender resolution I could find dates from 2014. It states in part, "Resolved, That the messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, June 10–11, 2014, affirm God’s good de...

I don't have the source, but a friend of mine, whose child's partner is transitioning, told me that the Southern Baptists also voted in the last couple of days to not recognise transgendered people. So perhaps Trump's actions are just more dog whistling to his base.

Re: Tonight's Doctor Who episode.

I watched the show and found some of it difficult simply because that sort of naked racism makes me squirm ... which was the writers' intent, I'm sure. And an intent I can't disapprove of. The one aspect of borrowing a real bit of history that I was uncomfortable with was the rewriting of Ms. Parks...
