Re: Hijack this thread

I saw Cisco today. He has been in his six-story kennel since Jan. 5. He looks great. The kennel owner (a tech at the local vet clinic) lets him out to roam around. She says he spends most of his time annoying her. I do not yet have a house for him. Maybe Monday. On the way back from Lebanon (where C...

Re: Mueller's investigation of Trump

With only a little touching-up this would make a fine NYT op-ed. It might make a difference.

I am not sure about Mitt Romney. He leans towards conservatism, but i think he is basically without firm principles.

Re: Suicide? Why?

I may have been influenced by the unique laws in Oregon and by my conversations with my coastal Oregon friend, a liberal all her life. However, i would not want my posts in this thread to be read as saying that suicide is always wrong and must be fought. There are situations -- not only of unending ...

Any clue how Zimmerman ran up a debt of that size? Maybe he bought a Florida mansion or a San Francisco townhouse.

Re: Tax Reform/Tax Cuts

The jury is still out on whether Trump's tax cuts will strengthen the economy. However, here in Connecticut we are seeing positive effects. Citing increased international competitiveness because of the corporate tax cuts, United Techonologies Corporation (Otis, Pratt & Whitney, Carrier) has announce...

Re: Sovereign Citizens and Related Nutz

The cargo cultists of the south Pacific believed that their ancestors were sending life-sustaining goods to them but that the soldiers and sailors were stealing these goods. They tried to attract the ancestors' gifts by mimicking the soldiers' installations. The cargo cult fit neatly into a longstan...

The Nature post includes an abbreviation about whinch I was uncertain. A widespread practice has arisen in the last few decades that gives dates (not ages) in the format "X Ma" (x million years ago); for example, rocks that formed 5 million years ago are said to date from 5 Ma. "5 Ma" is a point in ...

Re: No Catz but Kate's OK

Anybody know Korats? I would like to add a second cat to my household, and my 18 1/2 years with Sammy tell me the second cat should be a Korat. Cisco already knows Korats. It is a rare breed. Any ideas?

Racist and/or xenophobe, or both, Schlossberg is a despicable person. NYC does not want him or his like.

Trump opened his nasty mouth. We need to shut that monster down. Resignation would be great.

Re: Poll On Trump Cancelling South Korea / US maneuvers

I doubt that Trump has the intelligence to recognize that international diplomacy (or health care or anything else) is complicated. He does not study at all. For anything to penetrate that psychopathic brain requires the equivalent of the strike across the mule's brow.

Has anyone tried Japanese wines? Back in the days when i frequently traveled to Kobe, our hosts took us to the sawed-off top of one of the mountains. There was a vineyard there. I think some more learning is required for them to make a passable wine. Also, i am not sure that Kobe is the right place ...

Several years ago I had a summer student from Wiley College, the first HBCU west of the Mississippi. I have posted about her research before. Her main finding was that depression did NOT characterize black college students who attempted suicide. It was hopelessness. These students had a sense that n...

How informed is the DCCC about the politics of Texas 7th CD? Did they actually know that Fletcher could win the general election and that Moser could not? Or are they afraid of the progressives in the Democratic Party? I still do not trust the DNC and its activities.

Love conquers all, even if we extend our love to a person we know only by intense posts. There are people who try to commit suicide of whom we or anyone else in our community have never heard. For them we can do our best by looking for them, speaking to them, taking them food and into safe sleep, si...

I love being safe around bears. When I was a kid we visited my aunt in her home in Lake George (now submerged in the Denver Reservoir). Her house included a lower floor with bedrooms and bath. You had to go outside to get there. So when I went to go to sleep I would sometimes encounter bears out by ...

danraft and RoadScholar, I share your concern. There is something wrong in a society that requires such violence in its “entertainment.” We need more creativity in games and movies, not the highly repetitive gore. The problem is not to exercise crnsirship; it is to be creative in positive ways.

Re: Poll On Trump Cancelling South Korea / US maneuvers

There is one demand by the DPRK of which I would approve: a pledge not to invade the North. That would be a disaster for them and for us. True, the people would continue to live in poverty and oppression. They will have to remedy that themselves.

This is measured in terms of biomass? The most frequent life is also the smallest life. E O Wilson’s observation about nematodes always impressed me: if everything else about the Earth vanished, you could still see the ghost of the continents in the nematodes. It would be interesting to see the same...
