I was bitching earlier in the thread that a journalist put “presumed innocent” in scare quotes rather than just say the guy was presumed innocent.

I’ve seen only one indigo bunting around here — it was several years ago — but I did manage to get a picture.

I find it terrifying that the cop shot the teen when the teen was standing right in front of another person. However, Sugar Magnolia will be able to clarify this if she wishes to do so. I feel awful that I haven’t watched any of these videos. I didn’t watch a single George Floyd video, although I d...

Re: Marijuana

Virginia legalized it today. Beginning July 1st, folks over 21 can possess up to one oz, and grow 4 plants per household so long as the plants aren’t in public view. Not that any of this matters to me. I can’t possess it or use it since I’m retired from the military. And I don’t think I would even i...

That guy lives about 2.5 hours southwest of here, between Roanoke and Christiansburg. Parenthetically, my husband and I went out to dinner this evening for the first time in eons. The couple at the table next to us was talking very loudly with the people next to them, going on about how the election...

Re: Chauvin Jury deliberation poll

[ I realize that such rulings are somewhat rare. Usually, the appeals court simply sets aside the conviction and remands the case to the lower court for retrial, but there are circumstances in which a retrial is not possible, due to double jeopardy, so the defendant must be released. I don't think ...

In theory , an appellate court find reversible error. And that the error was attributable to the state, such that double jeopardy would apply. In theory. It’s not universally true that an appellate court “can’t just decide he’s not guilty.” At least one state (Texas?) has factual sufficiency review...

Re: Chauvin Jury deliberation poll

I just don’t think the defense could have gotten there. Mentally ill he may be, but I doubt he’s legally insane. I doubt they would even want to try. 'Legally insane' is in many ways worse than a guilty plea. I had a military client once who really was psychotic. She spent a few months in the State...

Save for the fact that he had a weird visage when he was snuffing George Floyd’s life out. I think he’s mentally ill. Defense never requested a mental evaluation. In hindsight it may not have been a bad idea. I doubt Chauvin would have agreed to it. Do we know that he never had one privately? In an...

He never dropped his head, closed his eyes, looked down...just no reaction other than looking confused at first and then angry. I hope he feels as helpless as George Floyd did.
