Re: Rest in Peace

No link yet but NPR just announced that Carl Kasell has died. Truly a giant in his field. NPR Thanks for that link. Carl was a big part of my mornings for many years (Morning Edition), and my Saturdays (Wait Wait) after that. I love listening to his answering machine messages they have linked.

Re: Tuition-Free Community College

There's a similar program in Tennessee - the Tennessee Promise scholarship. It's funded by the lottery, which also funds scholarships for students going to 4 year colleges (the Hope scholarship). The community college program was changed this year to apply to all adults, not just recent high school ...

Re: Tennessee US Senate 2018

Phil Bredesen is probably the only Democrat that could win a state-wide election in Tennessee. (He was governor from 2003-11, and won his 2nd term in a landslide.) And a lot of voters recognize that Marsha Blackburn is a frickin' nut. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Re: Trump had his attorney Michael Cohen pay porn star Stormy Daniels $130k in hush money

In many states states, inducing another to breach a contract is a tort (but not a crime). Various media are reporting that the interview will broadcast this Sunday (the 18th). Not a big surprise. I thought the network might decide to see if they can outsource some of the publicity work to Trump's l...

I'm not a lawyer. Even I can tell this guy is fucking stupid.

He has 3 lawyers telling him what to do, and all he can say is "it's ridiculous, I'm not going to comply. I'd rather go to jail than spend time on this."

Re: Worst-dressed stars at the Oscars

Oh, and did you notice that there were very few "who are you wearing?" questions this year? It's about damn time. The men might get asked this but then they'd move right on to what they are working on right now. The women used to *always* get asked, in great detail (dress, shoes, jewellery,makeup),...

Re: Worst-dressed stars at the Oscars

I have an Oscar tradition; I have a bunch of international friends and we do an online chat every year and watch the Red Carpet and the Oscars. It's much more fun that way! (And I won the pool; I had 19 out of 24 awards correct. 8-) ) One thing I've learned from viewing in a group like that - there ...

I heard an interview on NPR this morning with a group of voters from this district. And Trump walked away from his busine...

This. I didn't realize how small the NRA is. These voices can and must be drowned out by the vast majority of Americans who do not agree with them. I ran into an old friend the other day. She is retired (from teaching and coaching) but makes some cash certifying people for concealed carry licenses....

That skate was amazing! Pairs is my least favorite of the 4 figure skating disciplines, but I had tears in my eyes at the end. I'm so glad they were appropriately scored.

BTW, I heard that Christopher Dean of Torville and Dean fame choreographed that program.

Nathan Chen rebounded in a huge way in the free skate, landing five clean quads in a program that earned him a score of 215.08. I felt so bad for him after his short program and was so glad he redeemed himself! He really is an amazing athlete. I wish Javier Fernandez would have won the gold, though...

Nicholson's parents are involved - they're contributing to their son's opponent:

That a parent would do this seems like a warning to others: "We know what he's like, DON'T vote for him!"
