Re: Rebuilding Notre Dame de Paris

I suspect that the priests will be outside with the crowd most of the time - and that most of the tourism will be done from along the Left Bank anyway. But I recall from my visits that they usually have priests available for confession and counselling, and I suspect they want to make sure they can k...

Re: Mueller's investigation

Well I think the highlight is that Jr didn’t get busted for the trump tower meeting because he didn’t know it was illegal and there was no determined monetary value to the dirt offered. Yes. There are crimes you can be too stupid to commit, and Junior is clearly a beneficiary of that loophole. That...

Re: Fire!

The Grauniad has a good photo gallery with a lot of internal pictures. The damage is very bad, but could have been much, much worse. It looks like most of the internal arches and vaults held well, in small part due to the absence of aerial waterbombing but mostly because it turns out that those arc...

Re: Kavanaugh hearings: Avenatti casually tossing bombs

I get that -- and I probably don't notice the "yeah, that's" nearly as much. Mebbe the snideness isn't as obvious to everyone, either? It's that the avenatti topics really have turned into something unpleasant and personal, for the most part. I've considered posting news in them, but new news seems...

Re: Kavanaugh hearings: Avenatti casually tossing bombs

If variations such as "how many children have you reunited with parents," "pissing out of your ivory tower," "yeah that's" and so on are counted, it was more than one or two. A lot of those things were said out of frustration with things happening in society, and because there was nowhere else to se...

Re: Fire!

The first time I visited Notre Dame was a bit unusual. My wife was deployed, and we met in Europe for her mid-tour leave, over the Christmas holidays. I flew over a couple of days early with the kids, who were 7 and 9 at the time - landed in England, spent about 48 hours there, then to Frankfurt. Me...

Basic humanity is like a muscle. You have to exercise it, or it stops working properly.
It's an area where I need a lot of exercise. Probably more regular exercise than I get. But I don't think I'm the only one. If you get my drift.

Re: Julian Assange loses extradition appeal at Supreme Court

IIRC the Swedish requests are now time barred. I've heard that as well, but it wouldn't totally shock me if that was incorrect. I don't know a thing about the Swedish legal system, but there may be a provision to the effect that time spent as a fugitive does not count for statute of limitations pur...

Re: The Copyright Stuff

Mike, I don't know if my question/issue is similar to Sugar Magnolia's, but the problem I'm having with "fair usage" related to political speech is the notion that it is okay to use copyrighted "things" completely unrelated to the political speech for no other purpose than embellishment. In other w...

Re: Michael Avenatti

Out of curiosity, are the attorney fees that he charged for negotiating some of these settlements (e.g. 33% of $3million = $1million and 40% of $1.9million = $760,000) in line with normal practice? They seem pretty high to me, but this is not a world I inhabit. Apparently Avenatti thought those fee...

Re: Trump - POTUS Tweets and Social Media

To be honest, I'm not sure there's a clear definition for any kind of speech, political or otherwise. Mostly, people (and courts) seem to go with the classic Potter Stewart "I know it when I see it" test. (That was first applied in the context of obscenity.) I'm probably explaining myself poorly (po...
