Re: Earthquake! (or maybe Volcano!)

Mount Pele is a bit too close to Mount Pelée. Back in the early 1980s geologists didn't use the term pyroclastic flow to describe events like what happened on the island of Martinique in 1902. The French coined the term nuée ardente, meaning glowing cloud to describe the volcanic event. Most of the ...

Re: Earthquake! (or maybe Volcano!)

Kate, Sorry, late as usual. I've been working on a plat of a large land survey with a little over 100 original GLO stone corners, so blending my surveying and geologic talents with detailed descriptions of each stone. :-D There are many modern supervolcanoes around the earth. Several have been menti...

Re: Earthquake!

Kate, The short answer is no. There are many areas around the world with active volcanoes. The fact that two or more are erupting at the same time is mere coincidence. That is not always the case. To the southeast of the Big Island is the seamount Loihi. It will be the next Hawaiian island. Eruptive...

Re: Earthquake!

I've messed up good hiking boots on both a'a and pahoehoe. Difference being that I've sliced up the uppers of boots trying to get across a'a that was decades to centuries old, and the only time I managed to mess up boots by walking on pahoehoe was when the rock was probably less than days old and t...

Re: Earthquake!

In the Volcano videos thread there is an interesting video about types of lava. Thanks RVInit. Seeing video of the flow types is much better than still photos. Slightly off-topic, but still geology. The Hawaiian islands and several seamounts to the west-northwest and north west of the islands were ...

The motion to request reconsideration is going to have a number of extraneous shiny objects.
That adroit, attorney Avenatti is going to bait David Dennison into reading skimming having someone Fox and Friends tell him what's in the motion?

Re: Earthquake!

From my quick reads and the photos of the eruptions to date, the lava flows have been a'a' lavas. The video that volkonski just posted looks more like a pahoehoe flow. The old geology joke about Hawaiian lavas is that the term a'a' was coined by Hawaiians because that is what they said trying to wal...

Jeanette Finicum has become something of a cause celebre in the year more than two years since her husband’s death. Even the little details get past them. Yes. And they will also likely refer to him as a cattle rancher instead of professional foster parent. But, but, but he has his own brand...

Re: MO Gov. Greitens indicted for felony invasion

If you were able to shoot completely vertical, you would probably be safe because the round would lose its energy at the apex and the trip back would go no faster than terminal velocity. It still might hurt a bit if you were actually hit by it. The problem is that shooting exactly straight up would...
