Re: Hijack this thread

Estevio, that’s me! I’m in the process of retiring from my job because I am Sick To Death of calling rape victims liars. It’s exhausting. It’s soul-crushing. And it’s causing real stress in my life. So, “Why,” asks my husband, “do you obsessively listen to true crime podcasts?” I don’t know. It’s qu...

Re: Bundy related gossip and discussion

Yeah, it's a slippery slope, but it seems like protesting shouldn't be allowed in a residential zone. They're lucky none of the neighbors has gone 2A on them. I live in a townhouse. My former nextdoor neighbor is the owner of a large-ish security company that contracts with the government. One of h...

Re: Gavin Seim

I don’t actually want to say mean things. I think the worst I’ve ever said about him was to make a direct comparison between him and the antagonist from Mosquito Coast, which is an apt comparison, IMO. I also criticized his decision to flee rather than stay and litigate the issue of the government t...

Yeah, no. He wasn't a member until yesterday, and he hasn't posted anything yet. He might not join the conversation, but obviously nobody's in trouble for writing mean things about him before he was a member. More will be revealed. The situation is bound to develop over the next few days. I meant g...

Well, let's see what he has to say. I agreed to follow the rules when I signed up here and plan to do so when Gavin posts here. It is worth noting that the rules here are such that many of Gavin's polemics won't be allowed. I look forward to the possibility of him posting/talking/arguing here witho...

Re: USA v Michael T. Flynn; USDC for DC; False Statements to FBI; Guilty Plea

For those playing along at home... Here's the Readers' Digest of Cray: The district court has the discretion to grant a motion to withdraw a guilty plea before the sentence is imposed "upon a showing by the defendant of any fair and just reason." The court will only set aside the guilty plea "for go...

Re: Guantanamo Bay War Courts

When did journalists start referring to the military commissions as “war courts”? I didn’t notice this topic when it was first posted, and had never heard that term before today.

This American Life did an excellent episode about whether MSG is a myth, and the New England Journal letter. Give it a listen — it’s really good.

I’m just catching yo on this thread. I haven’t read all of these documents. Going back to the letter signed by Rudy, there are two sentences that make me think perhaps it wasn’t written by a native English speaker: “Separate representation is usual process.” Which is a LIE. “I have even had the pri...

Thanks, Filly! I’m not all that familiar with Rudy’s writing style. Unfortunately, duty calls so I haven’t had time to slog through the documents.

But It doesn’t surprise me that he is both sloppy and untruthful.

Recruiting has always been difficult. But I find it a bit shocking that they’re blaming recruiters for not being able to convince young men and women to join today’s military when those young people have every reason to be fearful.

The manufacturers are supposed to take the smoke detectors back. Most household haz waste programs won't touch them. Yeah, Fairfax County won’t take them. I pulled them from the trash and set them aside til I can contact the mfgr. I imagine the radioactive material isn’t cheap, so hopefully they’ll...

Re: The Weight-Management Thread

My doctor told me that where fat is stored on the body is a function of genetics, and the last place you gain is the first place you'll lose. I imagine that you could probably mess with that by interrupting your body's ability to store fat in a particular location. Some drugs have that effect (it's ...

As I mentioned the other day, we got nest smoke and CO2 detectors. They're working great. The problem is with the old smoke detectors. They were wired together so when one went off, they all went off. We took them all out and removed the batteries and threw them in the trash. One of them continued t...
