Re: Genetic Consequences of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade

I would have thought blending such disparate genetics would create stronger more healthy offspring, leaving aside the rapes etc. The European part of the Man's ethnicity estimate is, of course, Irish. The African part is a mixture but the three largest are: Nigeria, Cameroon/Congo and Mali. Those t...

Re: Genetic Consequences of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade

The Man's ancestors are from South Carolina near the Georgia border. They came from somewhere in the Caribbean to Charleston and from there to the rice plantations. It was unpleasant and difficult work, but the Africans had the experience with growing rice. Free people didn't particularly like livin...

Re: Coronavirus: Tracking & Testing

BTW, what Addie posted about disaster recovery folks is absolutely true. I worked at a bunch of PEMA disaster recovery centers after various hurricanes and the like. Most of the people on those teams are in their 50s and 60s. If we have a major hurricane roll through Florida or Texas we're in deep t...

Re: Coronavirus: Tracking & Testing

I don't know why she would focus on PA. In Montgomery County our positivity rate is 3.3%. In the worst of it during April it was more like 25%. Back then though you had to have a bunch of symptoms and a referral from a doctor to get tested. Now you can get tested if you want regardless of whether yo...

Re: On a Personal Level--Coronavirus COVID-19 Cancellations, etc.

We haven't been out at a restaurant since very early March. It might even have been the last week of February. We went to lockdown on March 13th. I was happy at the end of June when my favorite Poke restaurant reopened. It's in the mall and reopened with it. They're doing curbside pickup and delivery.

Apropos of nothing, but I did Uber-ing for 10 to 12 weeks from my retirement date until the first payment of my pension. There was a disagreement at the end of my job and I more or less got screwed out of my last two paychecks. I managed to get unemployment for a week and then I was able to Uber.* I...

Re: Coronavirus: Look to the governors

BTW, 3 former governors, two Republican and one Democratic have come out in favor of the way both Dr. Rachel Levine (director of public health) and he have handled the coronavirus. So, though they are rare we have some same Republicans in PA.

IMHO he probably shouldn't have bothered giving businesses the opportunity to make their case as to why they should go from non-essential to essential. He should have known that whatever way he went the Rethugs would continue to whine. They've been wanting to open the state back up since early April...

They're after Governor Wolf to resign. He's pretty much been ignoring them. That asshole from Butler County, Daryl Metcalfe, drafted articles of impeachment in June along with 24 other dunderheads. They haven't passed them and now he's saying "Resign or I'll put them through". I think if he was goi...

Not our governor, Tom Wolf. As Andy points out, he doesn't suck. Though he's taking lots of flack from Rethugs and other Pennsyltucky maroons (as Bugs would say).

If he was in real trouble we'd help him, but he was the hard-headed one who decided to go against all advice. If he ends up having to stay in a shitty hotel for 2 weeks, well, those are the breaks. Sometimes experience is the only way to learn. I'm hoping that this is the only thing that happens and...

We are pretty good on the opposite end of the state of wearing masks, too. I wonder what it's like in the "Tucky" part of the state. Washington County is very close to where I live. The first time I went there I didn't know what to expect as it's very republican. I was very relieved to see that the...

Re: Coronavirus: Sick or Dead by Stoopid

The stupid part is if they needed to go to a beach the Jersey shore is less than 50 miles away or they could have gone to one of our state parks. It wouldn't be ideal, but at least they wouldn't be somewhere that the virus is out of control.

So, the Man's 23 year old grandson decided to go down to FL for a few days with his friends because they'd been "working so hard". He still lives at home with his mother and 3 other siblings, one of whom is 5 and was premature. She looks like a perfectly healthy little girl but her lungs aren't quit...

About two weeks ago we had to go to the UPS Store to return two orders to Amazon for refund. Everyone was wearing a mask. Thank goodness. Fortunately we got there when there was only one other customer in the store. As we were leaving about 5 more showed up. TL:DR , we are pretty good about wearing ...

I'm surprised that it's only +6 for Governor Wolf. I know I live in a Democratic area, but I haven't heard a huge amount of grumbling about wearing a mask and all the rest of it. And the governor said today that he expects that the masks will be required--whenever you leave your house and in any bu...

Apparently my new Covid-19 sleeping times are anytime from 7 to 11 AM and 12 hours later. That's when I might fall asleep and sleep for more than 90 minutes. I'm going to try for next time.

Edited to say: because I miss you folks. :crying:

The question is do they have the votes to override the Governor veto....
Nope. That's why they went whining to the PA Supreme Court. They also don't have the votes to impeach him. They're just playing to the cheap seats with that.
