Re: Breaking News: National Intelligence Whistle Blower

I can't find it now, but someone on my Twitter feed made a very good point that the way this has played out has, in some ways, gone some distance to justify why Edward Snowden released what he released in the way that he released it. Of course there's a lot of just criticism* of what Snowden did, b...

Huh.

Wasn't one of the big energizing factors behind al qaeda/taliban/etc being upset over US troops stationed on holy land? Guess they got another recruiting bulletin.

Re: "Q" #QAnon "The Storm” "Any Day Now" 8Chan - Conspiracy Theories For Dummies

Sorry, I'm calling bullshit. The Sousken books and the John Birch Society have had a far greater influence over the American Right than some idiocy about Trans replacing people. The fact that YOU are obsessed with Trans people for whatever reason does not mean that the majority of the right gives a...

Re: Sheriff Glenn Palmer - the King of Grant County

Not all small towns. There is of course a distribution and how it plays out will depend on the individuals involved, but this type of corruption is a classic problem associated with small isolated representative democracies like these counties. They tend to end up with one (or a related cluster) of...

Re: Sheriff Glenn Palmer - the King of Grant County

It’s the Grant County way. It is the small town way in general. Not many people vote, and going up against an established local power family can be dangerous at worst and isolating at best. This is why I actually half feel sorry for Parsons... for all of his sovcit nuttery, he ended up on the wrong...

Re: Trump's Trade Follicy

Trader Joe is Aldi. ???? The same family owns both. Aldi North and Aldi South. Aldi South got to the US first, so Aldi North rebranded as 'Trader Joe' in the states. Though they are legally and financially separate entities, so they are not one company and are owned by two different branches of the...

I was just waiting for that word to come up. There is no racial connotation to that word. It's been in use since the mid-1500s, hundreds of years before slavery became an issue in Europe, much less in the (then non-existent) US. While they have no common root, back in the 90s people discovered that...

Yes context and thus reading comprehension and analytical skills do matter. So does awareness of a larger context. I can recall years ago listening to people get a big laugh out of using 'niggardly' to make fun of people, and if anyone pointed out the racial connotation they would get out their dic...

Given that we live in an era where words or phrases increasingly develop multiple meanings I would personally think that the context of how a word or phrase is used would be the determinative factor in whether or not it is being directed towards a particular group. Eh, but we are also talking about...

I could set the word censor to change tranny to tyranny, but is tranny really a slur? I remember when I wouldn't allow the word 'fag' (or maybe it was faggot?) and one of our gay members was offended that he couldn't use the word. Us poor victimized straight white old men have trouble navigating th...

Re: Gavin Seim

Because of a poot misspelling, we often use 'tranny' instead of 'tyranny'. But if that offends some people, maybe we should stop. That's a little different than 'baned' or 'brunt toast'. TBH, I really wish the usage would go away. I get the joke, but find it really cringy and I have to be careful a...

This is not uncommon. Back during Scott Walker’s runs for governor of Wisconsin, or Rainer in Illinois, there were lots of articles interviewing rural voters who were upset at the “city folk” sucking up more than their fair share. The reality of the situation was much the opposite - it was the citi...

I just realized this thread was for racial gerrymandering, which apparently went our way. But today's decision was for partisan gerrymandering. If there's a better thread for this, please move.
I think an interesting question is, does this decision effectively void the racial one?

I have read several articles and watched some videos but none of them mentioned anything from the previous evening. They all say the fire started around 4 AM and after it had burned a while there was a large explosion. This NBC video captured that pretty well: *nod* 4am is when the dramatic part ha...

With all the excited outrage that the military and warhawks express when a US boat or plane is harassed in thr Middle East, I wonder how they'd feel if a hostile power was patroling up and down the US coast on the edge of international waters or airspace? You probably saw a flare. Refineries are constantly burning off small amounts of waste gas. Flares are usually 100' to 200' tall. They always have a flame on top. A large refinery will have several of them. It was not a flare. Billowing black/brown smoke. I live right around the refineries, what I ...
